Artist Demonstration: David Susag

  • July 15, 2023 @ 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm
  • Parkway Place

From 1:00 – 4:00 pm on July 15th, local woodworker, David Susag, will demonstrate his use of a spring pole lathe to turn wooden vessels – without the use of electricity! David will be working with his lathe in Parkway Place (Open lot diagonally across from Parkway Avenue from Lanesboro Arts).

David turns wooden bowls on a spring pole lathe using hand forged tools. The lathe is a reciprocating lathe powered by entirely by David’s own strength, and the wood that he uses is fresh green wood. This turning technique dates back over a thousand years. David says” I have built the lathe and forged some of the tools myself. I am inspired by the ale bowls that I see in the Folk Museums in Norway and Vesterheim Norwegian-American Museum in Decorah, IA.” The constructed bowls are decorated with a food safe finish and are meant to be used.

All Lanesboro Arts Gallery artist demonstrations are free for all ages. Stop by and see this ancient technique in action, ask David about his creative process, and find rustically beautiful examples of his work for sale in the Gallery.

Also on July 15th, Lanesboro Arts is celebrating 30 years of the Lanesboro Art Gallery with a Special Anniversary Reception and After Hours Celebration! Find more about these events here.
