Akeila’s Story

"The Poem moves me to better myself..."

Akeila Attionna is a 21 year-old Program Assistant from Winona, MN.

“The poem moves me to better myself, thus creating a beautiful and clearer metaphor. For this makes me an artist.” Akeila is a young spoken word poet who was introduced to Lanesboro Arts in May of 2014 when she attended a free poetry workshop with Ed Bok Lee. Impressed with her work and her passion for sharing, Lanesboro Arts staff asked Akeila to perform at the Art and Poetry Festival and the Night of Poetry at the St. Mane Theatre in Lanesboro that September. She was encouraged by the enthusiastic feedback from so many audience members that evening. “As an artist, it showed me that I don’t have to have a perfect performance to feel beyond proud of myself, and to also create lasting connections.”
