As a sculptor of natural fibers, Martha utilizes basketry techniques as a foundation to create expansive conceptual forms that uphold the traditional craft, while simultaneously questioning its utilitarian assumptions. Her work is influenced by her professional expertise and life experiences, delving into the human body, expressions of trauma, and notions of resilience, energy, and growth. Martha follows a year-long process when working with her primary material, which consists of 6-10 foot chromatic varieties of willow that she locally grows and harvests using sustainable practices.
