About the Exhibition
While both artists explore the theme of landscapes, each brings a distinct vision and unique technique to their work. Kimberly’s acrylic paintings are defined by a minimalist approach, employing a carefully curated palette and the use of white space to create her compositions. In contrast, Susan’s watercolor, gouache, and ink pieces work through the interplay of light and dark, creating dynamic contrasts that evoke a sense of great depth. Together, their works traverse both the physical and emotional terrains of land and water, exploring the balance between calm and chaos, internal and external. “We are mesmerized by the horizon line and the deceptively simple scapes around us,” says Susan, “We paint what is familiar to us but is also constantly surprising.”
About the Artists
Susan Solomon is a freelance painter living in Saint Paul, Minnesota. Her work focuses on finding light and safe space in dark places, and the subjects are elements of the natural world. The main media she works with are gouache and ink in a resist technique which mimics stained glass, as well as bright soft pastels. Susan’s art education took place in a Las Vegas Community College and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts.
Kimberly Tschida Petters is also based in Saint Paul. Working with acrylics, she uses brushes, water, and paper towels to produce engaging effects at the horizon line. Kimberly paints very minimally to depict the extreme essence of the land as we see it. This purposeful minimalism allows the viewer to interject their own experiences without suggesting obvious information. The landscapes in her pieces depict nowhere in particular, but are inspired by the idea of “taking the long way home.” Kimberly received her Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in Painting and Drawing from the University of Minnesota. Her studio is in Northeast Minneapolis.
Accessible and free to the public, the Exhibition Gallery is located at 103 Parkway Ave N. in Lanesboro, Minnesota, and is open Wednesday – Saturday, 10 am – 5 pm. For more information, call 507-467-2446 or email gallery@lanesboroarts.org.
