“The Edge of Familiar” Exhibition

  • August 17, 2019 - October 13, 2019

Lanesboro Arts presents “The Edge of Familiar,” an exhibition of pastels by Linda Ricklefs Baudry. The exhibit runs through October 13th, 2019. Always free and open to the public, Lanesboro Arts Gallery is open seven days a week.

The exhibit focuses on emotional exploration and connection with the natural world, and springs from Linda’s fascination with the idea of edges. As she puts it, “Edges are where and how we define something. The familiar is what is known, the unknown is beyond, and it’s often how we embrace that edge that may help determine how we deal with change in life.” Through an exploration and interrogation of material and emotional boundaries, she encourages people to look beyond the surfaces of their lives and, in her words, “find some inner heartbeat to celebrate and embrace.”

Linda’s artistic process is deeply rooted in an awareness of the natural world, and she is continually intrigued by nature’s dual aspects of fragility and strength. Her work expresses deep emotions using the language of nature, blurring the boundaries between her own consciousness and her environment.

“Facing a blank sheet of paper I clear out my head, ground myself into the earth and with a brush, create movement with color. Using nature’s vocabulary of water, sky, earth, and flora, I respond to the hues, lines and shapes in front of me. Drawing upon a lifetime of observing flowers and trees I ask, what part of nature does this movement embody?” she says when describing her process. She seeks to encourage those who appreciate her art to engage with the natural world in a similarly open and mindful way.

The color, texture, and unique intimacy of pastels are what drew Linda to the medium. Her use of pastels also functions as an externalization of her self-reflection process. As she puts it, “Building up layers of pastel is much like building up (and at times exposing) layers of experience and memory in life.”

Linda Ricklefs Baudry’s studio is currently located in Saint Paul. Her work has been displayed throughout Minnesota and Wisconsin, including at the Yellow Bird Fine Art in Grand Marais and Your Art’s Desire Gallery in Minnetonka. You can view more of Linda’s work on her website: studiolrb.com
