SUMMARY:Gallery Holiday Shopping Saturday
DESCRIPTION:Lanesboro Arts encourages folks to shop local this holiday season\, by welcoming visitors to find artistic\, handmade gifts at the Lanesboro Arts Gallery! While we are sure you’ll find something wonderful at the gallery all year long\, on Saturday\, December 7th and Saturday\, December 14th\, from 10 am to 5 pm\, enjoy a special holiday shopping experience! \nShop unique artwork by over 80 artists from Minnesota\, Iowa\, and Wisconsin\, including many Lanesboro locals! In addition to our usual diverse offerings\, local artists will be showcasing unique seasonal inventory. You’ll be sure to find something for anyone on your list\, from stocking-stuffers to showstoppers. \nFrom 11 am – 1 pm on December 7th\, local artist Ann Madland will be in the gallery to visit with shoppers and showcase exclusive new pieces to add some sparkle to your life. Ann started creating jewelry at a young age by taking vintage jewelry pieces and sewing them on to fabric to create chokers\, designing looks to fully represent her authentic self. She envisions jewelry as an art form. Inspired by dreams\, magic\, and nature\, Ann becomes more energized as she watches designs evolve from thought to form. This positive energy is embedded into the jewelry and translates to the wearer. She hopes by wearing her jewelry as an extension of your self out in the world\, it creates a feeling of confidence\, beauty\, and abundance. Once you own a piece\, you will embody the magic. \nFrom 1 – 3 pm on December 7th\, local artist Joan Finnegan will host an artist demonstration of her oil painting prowess in the gallery. See the artist in action\, ask her questions\, and shop her gorgeous work! Joan Finnegan’s artistic journey has included working in a variety of 2D art mediums-watercolors\, acrylics\, pastel\, charcoal\, oils and fabrics. She owned and operated a custom frame shop/print gallery for 18 years along with teaching painting classes. Lately\, she works in both oils and watercolors\, beginning with a miniature rough sketch on paper to work out the composition and lighting\, moving to canvas or paper with brushes\, paints and a vision. Her current collection of work focuses on studies from nature revealing the softer side of the outdoor world. She invites the viewer to step into her art and surrender themselves to the emotion of that moment\, be it landscapes\, waterscapes\, or quirky portraits of country chickens and animals. \nLanesboro Arts will also be serving complimentary hot cocoa and cookies. SUMMARY:Gabriel Berg Artist Demonstration
DESCRIPTION:Stop by the Lanesboro Arts Gallery on November 2nd to see an Artist Demonstration from Gabriel Berg! From 12 – 3 pm\, Gabriel will be creating and answering visitor questions about his techniques and creative process! While you are in the gallery\, shop Gabriel’s original string art pieces\, alongside 80+ artists from Minnesota\, Iowa\, and Wisconsin. \nThis demonstration coincides with the launch of the Lanesboro Arts Fine Art Auction Fundraiser! The event runs online from November 2nd to November 10th \nGabriel Berg works with various threads\, creating a connection from the artwork to the viewer through sacred geometry and mandala work. Through symmetry and patience\, he creates highly detailed works of art that exude a sense of spiritual calm. He hand patterns\, designs\, and crafts support for the delicate threads and fibers that he weaves into detailed and colorful creations. Gabriel began making artwork in 2019 after he was diagnosed with a disabling medical condition that left him unable to continue in his former career. He found a new focus in his career as an artist\, showing his artwork at art fairs all around the Midwest. In February of 2023\, Gabriel was one of seven artists featured in the Lanesboro Arts Emerging Artist Exhibition. \nAlways free and open to the public\, the Lanesboro Arts Exhibition Gallery is open Tuesday – Saturday from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m\, and Sunday from 11 am – 3 pm. \nThis activity is made possible with grant funding from the AcenTek Foundation

SUMMARY:Embodied Multiplicity: Group Exhibition from Lanesboro BIPOC Artists-in-Residence
DESCRIPTION:Join Lanesboro Arts in celebrating the opening reception for “Embodied Multiplicity\,“ a group exhibition of collage\, dance\, interdisciplinary performance\, photography\, painting\, textiles\, and more from past Lanesboro Arts BIPOC Artist Residency participants. The opening reception will take place at the Lanesboro Arts Gallery on October 26th from 6 – 8 pm with the artists\, live music\, and refreshments. The exhibition will run from October 26th to December 21st\, 2024. \nEmbodied Multiplicity will celebrate the diversity of mediums and creativity of the artists who participated in the first two rounds of the BIPOC (Black\, Indigenous\, Persons of Color) Artist Residency at Lanesboro Arts. The artists whose work will be featured in this show are Akiko Ostlund\, Geno Okok\, Juan Diego Perez la Cruz\, Mary Prescott\, Mike Hoyt\, Sharon Mansur\, and Tiphanie “PH” Copeland. \nThe work in this show ranges from abstract painted textiles\, collage exploring systemic racism\, a series of paintings exploring dead and new media\, interdisciplinary dance film\, photography weaving tales of migration and displacement\, reflective mixed media portraiture\, and multidisciplinary performance art. \nAkiko Ostlund asks through her collage piece\, “How does weathering (premature aging and death of the BIPOC population caused by physiological impacts of unrelenting exposure to stressors in their physical and social environment) negatively affect you as a white person?” \nGeno Okok strives to influence creativity and modern pop art with his use of unique colors and textures. By creating paintings of everyday people\, his art is an artistic illustration of joyful moments in life. His work captures various elements of the African spirit; beauty\, music fashion\, femininity\, and grace. \nJuan Diego Perez la Cruz says his diverse mediums such as photography\, video performance\, and installation vividly reflect his “odyssey\, intricately weaving tales of migration and displacement.” \nMary Prescott is a Thai-American interdisciplinary artist\, theater-maker and musician who explores identity and social conditions through experiential performance\, creating embodied work that draws critical attention toward social imbalances. \nMike Hoyt’s creative practice includes drawing\, painting\, graphic storytelling\, network technology\, public participation\, and community land stewardship. His series “Dead Media Memory” is a slow rumination on our evolving relationship to new media versus analog media. \nSharon Mansur’s ongoing artistic curiosities include experimental and often collaborative and interdisciplinary approaches. Mansur “weaves performances\, site-specific happenings\, visual installations\, community meals\, and dance for film from the threads of dreams\, imagination and embodied memories past\, present and future.” \nTiphanie (PH) Copeland\, an artist-organizer from North Minneapolis\, is deeply connected to her vibrant community. Currently\, PH utilizes mixed media and multimedia art to express her advocacy work\, challenging people to understand causes holistically. \nAlways free and open to the public\, the Lanesboro Arts Exhibition Gallery is open Tuesday – Saturday\, 10 am – 5 pm. \nFeatured Image: Lagunas Mentales by Juan Diego Perez la Cruz \nThis activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board. \n

SUMMARY:"Traces of a Prairie" Drawings by Lois Peterson
DESCRIPTION:Lanesboro Arts is thrilled to present “Traces of a Prairie\,“ an exhibition of drawings by Lois Peterson. This series of large-scale works in graphite preserves the imagery of native prairie plants and woodland trees in exquisite detail. Her work ruminates on the impacts of crop farming on local ecosystems while honoring the beauty of a vanishing native landscape. \n“Traces of a Prairie” will run from August 17th to October 20th. Celebrate the Opening Reception with us on Saturday\, August 17th from 6:00 – 8:00 pm. The first 100 guests will receive native plant seedlings courtesy of the artist\, and all guests may also take home free seeds and instructions from Prairie Moon Nursery in Winona. \nThrough creating detailed\, large-scale drawings of dormant\, native prairie plants\, as well as fallen segments of trees\, Lois Peterson recognizes the vital role they hold in maintaining a critical balance in our natural environment. Creating the series of drawings in “Traces of a Prairie” has allowed her to mourn these native plants’ diminishing existence. Through both the act of drawing and the act of restoring land\, she is acquiring an understanding of her place and identity as a rural artist\, as a person with an agricultural history\, and as a person aware of an ecosystem in need of help. \nThe imagery found in Lois Peterson’s art comes to her slowly over the course of several years\, or perhaps more accurately\, over the course of a lifetime. Peterson grew up in a fourth-generation farming family and now recognizes her family’s history regarding the devastation inflicted on prairies and woodlands. She grew up in a time when slight consideration was given to what had existed on the land before her family’s own personal fields of corn\, hay\, and oats. She was already deep into adulthood when she realized that her family\, including herself\, had financially gained roots through the plowing under of prairies and the cutting down of woodlands. Recognizing the negative impacts of farming practices was inevitable. \nOver the years\, Peterson has alternated between abstract/formal pieces and the mostly representational work found in the “Traces of a Prairie” series. Through the act of drawing\, she tries to find a current of meaning\, frequently encountering the limits of her understanding in the process. \nFor the past ten years\, Peterson has been engaged with reintroducing a small prairie and planting native trees on her land in Dakota\, Minnesota along the banks of the Mississippi River. The value of natural prairies for our ecosystems is always in her thoughts when she is engaged with drawing. \nAlways free and open to the public\, the Lanesboro Arts Exhibition Gallery is open Tuesday – Saturday\, 10 am – 5 pm. \nFeatured Image: Traces by Lois Peterson \nLois Peterson is a fiscal year 2024 recipient of a Creative Individuals grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board. This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board.

SUMMARY:Opening Reception for “Moments of Magic” Landscape Oil Paintings by Kat Nottingham
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate the opening of  “Moments of Magic”: An Exhibition of Landscape Oil Paintings by Kat Nottingham\, on Saturday\, April 6th from 6:00 – 8:00 pm. Stop into the Lanesboro Arts Exhibition Gallery to see Nottingham’s paintings and visit with the artists herself! There will also be complimentary refreshments and live music by local musician Paul Schmidt. \nAs an impressionist landscape oil painter Kat Nottingham is inspired by the beauty of the natural world and the fleeting moments of light and color that illuminate it. Her contemporary representational and impressionistic landscape paintings draw inspiration from her experiences as an active Minnesota outdoor enthusiast: sailing on Lake Pepin\, biking state pathways\, and hiking along the North Shore. \nNottingham is best known for her waterscape paintings\, which depict Minnesota’s marshlands\, lakes\, and rivers. She says “There’s something peaceful and contemplative about water\, but it can also be powerful and full of energy.” Nottingham compounds this energy through her adroit depictions of reflected and refracted light\, which adds further dimensions of movement and color to her plein air and studio paintings. \nShe is also inspired by the beauty and energy in nighttime cityscapes. Her nocturnes glow with pure prismatic color\, contrasting against deep shadows. \nAlways free and open to the public\, the Lanesboro Arts Exhibition Gallery is open Tuesday – Saturday\, 10 am – 5 pm in April\, 2024. \nFeatured Image: “Autumn on the Marsh” by Kat Nottingham \nThis exhibit is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a Minnesota State Arts Board Operating Support grant\, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund. SUMMARY:"Moments of Magic" Landscape Oil Paintings by Kat Nottingham
DESCRIPTION:Lanesboro Arts presents “Moments of Magic”: An Exhibition of Landscape Oil Paintings by Kat Nottingham at the Lanesboro Arts Exhibition Gallery. Nottingham’s paintings shine with their reverential representations of ephemeral light\, from the soft-spreading glow of a sunset to the luminescent pool of a street lamp. This show will run from April 6th to June 2nd\, with an opening reception on Saturday\, April 6th from 6:00 – 8:00 pm. \nAlways free and open to the public\, the Lanesboro Arts Exhibition Gallery is open Tuesday – Saturday\, 10 am – 5 pm in May\, 2024. \nFeatured Image: “Autumn on the Marsh” by Kat Nottingham \n  \n“Moments of Magic” is sponsored by the Commonweal Theatre Company. \nThis exhibit is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a Minnesota State Arts Board Operating Support grant\, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund. For more information visit www.lanesboroarts.org\, call 507-467-2446 or email gallery@lanesboroarts.org. Handicapped accessible and free to the public\, the exhibition gallery is located at 103 Parkway Avenue North in Lanesboro\, MN.

SUMMARY:SEMAC Capstone Event for Delia Bell:
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a free to the public capstone event celebrating potter Delia Bell’s exploration of ceramic slab vessels\, on Saturday\, March 9th from 4:00 pm – 6:00 pm. This event will be held at the Lanesboro Arts Gallery\, 103 Parkway Avenue North\, Lanesboro\, MN. Delia will share about her creative investigation into slab pottery\, and display the resulting work. \nThis activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through the Minnesota State Arts Board and a grant from the Southeastern Minnesota Arts Council (SEMAC) thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts & cultural heritage fund. \nAbout the Project: Exploring Ceramic Slab Vessels\n \nDelia’s interest in constructing pottery with slabs was sparked by the ability to make rectilinear forms. Slab pottery is created from flat sheets of clay which are cut and joined together. Various factors such as slab size\, drying time\, weight\, folds\, and angles all impact the final structure of a piece. Much of her other ceramic work is thrown on a pottery wheel\, which results in curvilinear forms. This makes her exploration of slab pottery a new frontier in her personal artistic practice. \nAbout SEMAC: \nOn March 21\, 2023\, the Board of Directors of the Southeastern Minnesota Arts Council (SEMAC) awarded 36 grants for a total of $143\,810 in funding to applicants throughout southeastern Minnesota. This included four school residency grants for $11\,810\, fourteen emerging artist grants for $42\,000\, and eighteen advancing artist grants for $90\,000. Delia Bell received an Emerging Artist Grant grant\, and has spent the past year exploring ceramic slab vessel pottery.\n \nSEMAC is the State Arts Board-designated granting authority for local/regional arts producing and sponsoring organizations and disburses funds allocated for this purpose by the Minnesota State Legislature. The SEMAC region includes the counties of Dodge\, Fillmore\, Freeborn\, Goodhue\, Houston\, Mower\, Olmsted\, Rice\, Steele\, Wabasha\, and Winona. \nFor information about the grant application process\, eligibility\, or grant writing assistance\, contact the SEMAC office at 2778 D Commerce Dr. NW\, Rochester\, MN 55901 or call 507-281-4848. SUMMARY:Opening Reception for “How I See Now” Paintings by Eddie Hamilton
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate the opening of “How I See Now\,” an exhibition of paintings by Eddie Hamilton\, on Saturday\, February 3 from 6:00 – 8:00 pm. Stop into the Lanesboro Arts Exhibition Gallery to see Hamilton’s paintings and visit with the artists himself! There will also be complimentary refreshments and live music. \nAbout the show: \nLanesboro Arts presents “How I See Now\,” an exhibition of paintings by Eddie Hamilton at the Lanesboro Arts Exhibition Gallery. “How I See Now” is a collection of layered\, impressionistic paintings that showcase diverse landscapes that share a unique sensory connection. These paintings are inextricably tied to Eddie’s decision to stop using alcohol. In doing so\, he experienced a newfound\, heightened sensory and emotional connection to the natural world around him. As Eddie says\, “I see\, hear\, and smell more in nature than I ever have. They are more than just paintings of nature but the symbol of my fresh start in life.” \nThis show will run from February 3rd to March 31st. \nEddie Hamilton’s artistic influences range from post-impressionists like Gaugin and Serusier to contemporaries like Haring. He paints both with “the intent of evoking a feeling of awe from nature but also capturing a pure and impressionistic feel that gives the image the essence of the fragility of nature and the absurd joy I get from being a part of it all”. \nChange has always been a part of Eddie Hamilton’s painting process. Over the years\, Eddie has used acrylic paint due to the rugged quickness his paintings demanded. Now working in oil paints\, his work and approach have softened. Change and exploring new ways of making paintings are his joy. Currently\, he paints landscapes of Minnesota from traditional scenes to topographical depictions. \nEddie started painting landscapes six years ago\, about the time he stopped drinking. One of the results was an unexpected change in perspective. The phrase “you are good enough” was particularly profound and consistently returned to him. “You are good enough” opened his eyes about what he could do. At the same time\, Eddie found himself outside more and more\, staring at nature in wonder. He loved the mundane in the color of the gray skies\, the still woods\, and the everyday surprises of being outdoors. \nEddie’s current obsession is the beauty in the mundane – in life and art. He intentionally pays attention to the spaces that are often overlooked in our landscapes and pulls these spaces forward. His painting doesn’t depict landmarks or famous views\, but the space between that holds the land together. Eddie has paintings of the shadows\, of the swampy shores of a small pond\, and of prairie grasses’ subtle movement in the breeze. \nAlways free and open to the public\, the Lanesboro Arts Exhibition Gallery is open Wednesday – Saturday\, 10 am – 5 pm in February and March\, 2024. \n \nFebruary 4 – 11\, 2024 | Winona MN \nThis exhibit is sponsored by the Frozen River Film Festival\, which runs from February 4-11\, 2024 in Winona\, MN and made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a Minnesota State Arts Board Operating Support grant\, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund. For more information visit www.lanesboroarts.org\, call 507-467-2446 or email gallery@lanesboroarts.org. SUMMARY:Gallery Holiday Shopping Event
DESCRIPTION:Shop local this holiday season\, with two special Saturday shopping events at the Lanesboro Arts Gallery! On Saturday December 2nd and 9th\, we welcome you to find unique\, handmade gifts for everyone on your list. \nOur team will offer complimentary gift wrapping. While you shop\, chat with local artists about their work\, and enjoy artist demonstrations from fiber artist Karen Schmidt (December 2nd) and oil painter Joan Finnegan (December 9th). We’ll serve cocoa and cookies to satisfy your sweet tooth and we’ll have winter wonderland coloring pages designed by local artist\, Diane Knight! \nWith more than eighty regional and local artists\, creating unique artwork in many mediums\, we’re sure you’ll find meaningful gifts  — from stocking-suffers to showstoppers. \nKaren Schmidt creates unique felted sculptures from wool she raises on her farm near Preston\, MN. She keeps a flock of Icelandic sheep\, llamas\, and alpacas. She processes all of the wool by herself\, striving to make the wool look as natural and beautiful as it did on the animal! This is a labor of love and she enjoys every step in the process. Her art is intended to honor the animals. \nJoan Finnegan creates art that celebrates the colors and harmony of nature\, capturing the wonder of a fleeting moment and the quality of light as it defines the subject\, whether it be a landscape\, still life or portrait. Her core work is inspired by the best of impressionism and realism. She also paints in an additional expressive style\, which she calls the “Fabric of the Lanesboro Landscape.” She invites the viewer to step into her art and surrender themselves to the emotion of that moment. \nDiane Knight finds herself doodling in meetings\, on the phone\, and especially when she is seeking calm. One day\, she was inspired to try doodling over a bit of color and had so much fun she hasn’t been able to stop since! Since retiring from the Mayo Clinic’s art department and creating masks and puppets with Rochester’s Masque Theatre\, she has experimented with different mediums and learned how to use power tools. In addition to being a prolific visual artist\, Diane is also a poet. \nThe Lanesboro Arts Gallery features work by more than 80 artists from Minnesota\, Iowa\, and Wisconsin. As a multidisciplinary arts organization with a passion for engaging its community with art\, the Lanesboro Arts sales and exhibition galleries strive to present accessible and diverse works that foster educational opportunities for visitors as well as impacting artists’ careers.

SUMMARY:"People\, Places and Things" Paintings by Christine Tierney and Michele Combs
DESCRIPTION:Visit the Lanesboro Arts Exhibition Gallery to take in a joint exhibition of gorgeous oil paintings. “People\, Places and Things” brings the work of Christine Tierney and Michele Combs together in the final exhibition of 2023. This exhibit is open from October 21st to December 23rd. \nChristine Tierney and Michele Combs share a passion for painting beautiful expressions of the world around them. While they were both classically trained in the tradition of the Old Masters\, they have each forged their own individual paths in the art world. Some of their paintings are done outdoors in the elements\, where mother nature calls the shots\, and some are painted in the comfort of their studios\, with controlled temperature and lighting. Like handwriting\, the artistic expression created when wielding a paintbrush will always carry the personal touch of the one that created it. Their works exhibited together complement each other and provide the viewer with two unique interpretations of People\, Places and Things. \nMichele Combs lives in Minneapolis. She attended the University of MN for a B.S. in Occupational Therapy. Art is something that she was always drawn to\, now considering herself a professional painter. Her training included traditional realism instruction at the Minnesota River School of Fine Art and workshops with talented painting instructors. \nAfter a long career in advertising\, Christine Tierney returned to her heart’s desire and studied classical painting in the methods of the old masters. She can often be found painting in her studio in St. Paul\, and  also ventures outside to paint plein air. The majority of her paintings are created in oil or pastel. \nAn artist reception opens the show on Saturday\, October 21 from 6:00 to 8:00\, featuring refreshments and live jazz by Dave O’Mara and friends. \n This exhibition is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a Minnesota State Arts Board grant\, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund. \nOil painting by Christine Tierney. \nOil painting by Michele Combs.

SUMMARY:Artist Reception "Fur and Feathers" by Julie Fakler
DESCRIPTION:Lanesboro Arts presents Fur and Feathers: Domestic Animal Portraits by painter Julie Fakler. The artist’s reception will open the show on Saturday\, August 19\, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. It will feature live music by Ann and Andy Lowe and light refreshments. \nJulie Fakler paints vibrant one of a kind domestic animal portraits by applying many thin layers of acrylic paint. “Fur and Feathers” will feature more than twenty of these portraits. She is the current Visual Arts and Education Director at the Paradise Center for the Arts in downtown Faribault. \n\n\nJulie will demonstrate her painting technique in the gallery from 2:00 to 5:00 on Saturday\, August 19\, before the reception at 6:00 that evening. \nFur and Feathers will run from August 19th to October 15th. \n\nThis exhibit is sponsored by Inspire(d) Media and made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a Minnesota State Arts Board Operating Support grant\, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.
