SUMMARY:Here in the World: Contemporary Landscapes by Susan Solomon and Kimberly Tschida Petters
DESCRIPTION:Lanesboro Arts is thrilled to present “Here in the World” an exhibition featuring the contemporary landscapes of Susan Solomon and Kimberly Tschida Petters. From bold abstractions to intricate depictions of the world\, the pieces in this exhibition invite viewers to engage with rich colors and intentional horizon lines that ground the eye and stir the imagination. \n“Here in the World” will be on view at the Lanesboro Arts Gallery from April 5th through June 1st\, 2025. Celebrate the Opening Reception from 6 – 8 pm on Saturday\, April 5th. This free community event offers a first look at the exhibition with live music\, refreshments\, and the opportunity to hear from the artists themselves. \nAbout the Exhibition \nWhile both artists explore the theme of landscapes\, each brings a distinct vision and unique technique to their work. Kimberly’s acrylic paintings are defined by a minimalist approach\, employing a carefully curated palette and the use of white space to create her compositions. In contrast\, Susan’s watercolor\, gouache\, and ink pieces work through the interplay of light and dark\, creating dynamic contrasts that evoke a sense of great depth. Together\, their works traverse both the physical and emotional terrains of land and water\, exploring the balance between calm and chaos\, internal and external. “We are mesmerized by the horizon  line and the deceptively simple scapes around us\,” says Susan\, “We paint what is familiar to us but is also constantly surprising.” \nAbout the Artists \nSusan Solomon is a freelance painter living in Saint Paul\, Minnesota. Her work focuses on finding light and safe space in dark places\, and the subjects are elements of the natural world. The main media she works with are gouache and ink in a resist technique which mimics stained glass\, as well as bright soft pastels. Susan’s art education took place in a Las Vegas Community College and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. \nKimberly Tschida Petters is also based in Saint Paul. Working with acrylics\, she uses brushes\, water\, and paper towels to produce engaging effects at the horizon line. Kimberly paints very minimally to depict the extreme essence of the land as we see it. This purposeful minimalism allows the viewer to interject their own experiences without suggesting obvious information. The landscapes in her pieces depict nowhere in particular\, but are inspired by the idea of “taking the long way home.” Kimberly received her Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in Painting and Drawing from the University of Minnesota. Her studio is in Northeast Minneapolis. \nAccessible and free to the public\, the Exhibition Gallery is located at 103 Parkway Ave N. in Lanesboro\, Minnesota\, and is open Wednesday – Saturday\, 10 am – 5 pm. For more information\, call 507-467-2446 or email gallery@lanesboroarts.org. \nThis activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board\, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund. \nFeatured Image: Wild at High Noon by Kimberly Tschida Petters

SUMMARY:2025 Early Career Artist Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Lanesboro Arts is thrilled to present the 2025 Early Career Artist Exhibition! This group exhibition showcases a vibrant collection of works from eight up-and-coming artists working across many different mediums. This year’s iteration of the show includes work by John Armendariz\, Elea Besse\, Leo Fortune\, Sarah Hutchison\, Soph Munic\, Anh Nguyen\, Jennifer Plourde\, and Emily Quandahl. Each of these artists presents a unique artistic vision and thoughtful creative perspective that will inspire and delight. \nThis exhibition will run from February 8th to March 30th\, 2025. Celebrate the Opening Reception at the Lanesboro Arts Gallery on February 8th! Hear from the artists and get a first look at their work in a joyfully artful evening. \nThe Early Career Artist Exhibition (formerly Emerging Artist Exhibition) was developed in 2015 to meet the needs of artists with burgeoning new talent; this juried show gives emerging artists an opportunity to display work in a professional gallery setting. Lanesboro Arts is dedicated to supporting the growth of early-career artists as an important function of its mission to serve as a community arts catalyst. Lanesboro Arts Defines an “Emerging Artist” as an individual who has great potential in their artistic practice\, but has not yet received major recognition\, has not yet been substantially celebrated for their work\, and/or has not yet established significant ‘footing’ within their field. \nAbout the Artists: \nJohn Armendariz creates art inspired by wildlife and my connection to nature\, blending intricate line work with loose\, expressive watercolor to capture emotion and movement. His use of vibrant colors\, abstract details\, and a simple palette creates a dreamlike quality while keeping the focus on the subject. As a member of the Ho-Chunk Nation\, John’s work reflects my cultural identity and love for the natural world\, aiming to bring awareness to native wildlife and the beauty of the outdoors. Through my art\, he hopes to encourage people to slow down\, put their phones away\, and take time to connect with nature and the world around them.\n \nElea Besse is a Saint Paul\, Minnesota raised artist. She obtained her Bachelor of Arts in Studio Art from Whitman College (Walla Walla\, WA) in 2023\, with a concentration in Ceramic Studies. She also has a minor in Rhetoric\, Writing\, and Public Discourse from Whitman which she frequently draws upon in her creative practice. Combining themes of memory\, time\, place\, and environmental processes\, Elea’s artwork serves as material means for the exploration of these transient concepts. Her creative process lies in a deliberate\nembrace of natural and abstracted forms and utilizing decals\, everyday objects and elements from nature. In creating ceramic sculptures and hanging objects\, she translates introspective experiences and emotional processes into tactile objects. Elea is currently based in the Twin Cities\, Minnesota where she gains much of her creative inspiration from the midwestern landscape and her community. \n Leo Fortune believes that art has the power to heal the wounds of being alive. Sitting with a painting is like slowing down and connecting to our breathing; both reconnect us to our body\, mind and soul. Grounding in our breath\, encouraging our nervous system to be in rest and digest\, allows us to process our human experience. In their watercolor paintings\, Leo uses symbols like trees\, fairy doors and spirals to hold space for vulnerability – to be able to turn inward\, face and love all of our parts. \nAt 24\, Sarah Hutchison feels as though they are either on the edge of discovering some sort of greatness\, or that they are losing it. “When I was young\, I really wanted to be famous. I wanted to be a pop star. When you’re 24 you leave your home to go somewhere new and uncharted\, it feels like what being a pop star would feel like. And when you’re actually living it and everyday you don’t know a single person and you’re performing day in day out\, it’s basically the same thing.” As the high school art teacher for Fillmore Central\, Sarah gets to make art\, but this time has 40 tweens and teens looking over their shoulder. They’ve found that their student’s curiosity\, their interest\, even their indifference has found its way into their work. “They’re pop stars\, too.” Sarah makes their work out of an abundance of confidence – out of a feeling that one can do anything when on the edge of something. \nSoph Munic uses traditional sewing\, quilting\, and soft sculpture techniques to recontextualize themes of comfort\, memory\, and gender. They use found fabrics to investigate their relationship to desire and intimacy. By using craft processes that are associated with “women’s work” and domestic labor\, Soph is able to quilt objects that recontextualize gendered expectations in a gendered material. When enveloped in a quilt\, the textiles behave as “the first house of the body” (Ann Hamilton) while also fracturing the patchwork of the quilt. Through their work\, Soph asks\, “How does this fractured pattern play with shape to articulate my experience?” \nAnh Nguyen creates work that captures a collision of memories and dreams through collaged images. She explores the unconscious\, symbolic\, and surreal nature of dreams—a fusion of the past\, deep yearnings\, and imagined scenarios. Through painting\, Anh weaves together these visual fragments\, reflecting on their\nmeanings and drawing a cohesive narrative. \n Jennifer Plourde discovered expression through painting later in life. “I made a massive shift in my life that was very painful – it was like jumping off a cliff into the unknown. I initially lost almost everyone in my life\, but I held on to a deep faith that there was something more. There was a short time of darkness until my life grew beyond what I could have imagined.” Through finding herself\, Jennifer opened her eyes to color\, detail\, love\, and a fullness of life that she hadn’t experienced before. It was what inspired her desire to learn how to paint. She is continually growing and learning how to capture her passion for life in paint. Jennifer hopes that her art inspires a sense of freedom and acceptance\, and that others catch a glimpse of the world’s mystery and beauty – how the light illuminates the landscape around us\, the shifting clouds\, shadows\, darkness and light. \nEmily Quandahl explores the intersection of domestic craft and the societal perceptions of female pleasure. Emily’s art is rooted in personal experiences\, utilizing vibrant colors to create atmospheric vignettes inspired by the brain’s chemical reactions during climatic emotional surges. She begins with an intuitive painting method\, using diluted acrylics and dyes on raw canvas to form a foundational layer before dismantling the painted canvas by integrating traditional household crafts such as mending\, embroidery\, and hand-stitched quilting. This process drives Emily to reflect on the expectations of women and the value of their work and time\, while simultaneously slowing down to learn and adapt skill sets that are often overlooked. Through visual representation in Emily’s practice of the two categories women’s sexuality are often placed into\, the virgin or the whore\, she creates a conversational harmony that lends no more value to one side or the other\, a dance between these perceptions that enables her to reclaim the narrative of both. \nFeatured Image: Details from All Shall Pass #2 by Anh Nguyen and Quilt 4 by Emily Quandahl \n \n  \nThe 2025 Early Career Artist Exhibition is a part of our on-going Gallery Equitable Systems Review Project. This work is funded in part by Minnesota Humanities Center with money from the Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund that was created with the vote of the people of Minnesota on November 4\, 2008. \n  \nThe exhibit is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a Minnesota State Arts Board Operating Support grant\, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund. \nFor more information visit www.lanesboroarts.org\, call 507-467-2446 or email gallery@lanesboroarts.org. Ann started creating jewelry at a young age by taking vintage jewelry pieces and sewing them on to fabric to create chokers\, designing looks to fully represent her authentic self. She envisions jewelry as an art form. Inspired by dreams\, magic\, and nature\, Ann becomes more energized as she watches designs evolve from thought to form. This positive energy is embedded into the jewelry and translates to the wearer. She hopes by wearing her jewelry as an extension of your self out in the world\, it creates a feeling of confidence\, beauty\, and abundance. Once you own a piece\, you will embody the magic. \nFrom 1 – 3 pm on December 7th\, local artist Joan Finnegan will host an artist demonstration of her oil painting prowess in the gallery. See the artist in action\, ask her questions\, and shop her gorgeous work! Joan Finnegan’s artistic journey has included working in a variety of 2D art mediums-watercolors\, acrylics\, pastel\, charcoal\, oils and fabrics. While you are in the gallery\, shop Gabriel’s original string art pieces\, alongside 80+ artists from Minnesota\, Iowa\, and Wisconsin. \nThis demonstration coincides with the launch of the Lanesboro Arts Fine Art Auction Fundraiser! Gabriel began making artwork in 2019 after he was diagnosed with a disabling medical condition that left him unable to continue in his former career. He found a new focus in his career as an artist\, showing his artwork at art fairs all around the Midwest. In February of 2023\, Gabriel was one of seven artists featured in the Lanesboro Arts Emerging Artist Exhibition. \nAlways free and open to the public\, the Lanesboro Arts Exhibition Gallery is open Tuesday – Saturday from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m\, and Sunday from 11 am – 3 pm. \nThis activity is made possible with grant funding from the AcenTek Foundation

SUMMARY:Embodied Multiplicity: Group Exhibition from Lanesboro BIPOC Artists-in-Residence
DESCRIPTION:Join Lanesboro Arts in celebrating the opening reception for “Embodied Multiplicity\,“ a group exhibition of collage\, dance\, interdisciplinary performance\, photography\, painting\, textiles\, and more from past Lanesboro Arts BIPOC Artist Residency participants. The opening reception will take place at the Lanesboro Arts Gallery on October 26th from 6 – 8 pm with the artists\, live music\, and refreshments. The exhibition will run from October 26th to December 21st\, 2024. \nEmbodied Multiplicity will celebrate the diversity of mediums and creativity of the artists who participated in the first two rounds of the BIPOC (Black\, Indigenous\, Persons of Color) Artist Residency at Lanesboro Arts. The artists whose work will be featured in this show are Akiko Ostlund\, Geno Okok\, Juan Diego Perez la Cruz\, Mary Prescott\, Mike Hoyt\, Sharon Mansur\, and Tiphanie “PH” Copeland. \nThe work in this show ranges from abstract painted textiles\, collage exploring systemic racism\, a series of paintings exploring dead and new media\, interdisciplinary dance film\, photography weaving tales of migration and displacement\, reflective mixed media portraiture\, and multidisciplinary performance art. \nAkiko Ostlund asks through her collage piece\, “How does weathering (premature aging and death of the BIPOC population caused by physiological impacts of unrelenting exposure to stressors in their physical and social environment) negatively affect you as a white person?” \nGeno Okok strives to influence creativity and modern pop art with his use of unique colors and textures. By creating paintings of everyday people\, his art is an artistic illustration of joyful moments in life. His work captures various elements of the African spirit; beauty\, music fashion\, femininity\, and grace. \nJuan Diego Perez la Cruz says his diverse mediums such as photography\, video performance\, and installation vividly reflect his “odyssey\, intricately weaving tales of migration and displacement.” \nMary Prescott is a Thai-American interdisciplinary artist\, theater-maker and musician who explores identity and social conditions through experiential performance\, creating embodied work that draws critical attention toward social imbalances. \nMike Hoyt’s creative practice includes drawing\, painting\, graphic storytelling\, network technology\, public participation\, and community land stewardship. His series “Dead Media Memory” is a slow rumination on our evolving relationship to new media versus analog media. \nSharon Mansur’s ongoing artistic curiosities include experimental and often collaborative and interdisciplinary approaches. Mansur “weaves performances\, site-specific happenings\, visual installations\, community meals\, and dance for film from the threads of dreams\, imagination and embodied memories past\, present and future.” \nTiphanie (PH) Copeland\, an artist-organizer from North Minneapolis\, is deeply connected to her vibrant community. Currently\, PH utilizes mixed media and multimedia art to express her advocacy work\, challenging people to understand causes holistically. \nAlways free and open to the public\, the Lanesboro Arts Exhibition Gallery is open Tuesday – Saturday\, 10 am – 5 pm. \nFeatured Image: Lagunas Mentales by Juan Diego Perez la Cruz \nThis activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board. \n

SUMMARY:"Traces of a Prairie" Drawings by Lois Peterson
DESCRIPTION:Lanesboro Arts is thrilled to present “Traces of a Prairie\,“ an exhibition of drawings by Lois Peterson. This series of large-scale works in graphite preserves the imagery of native prairie plants and woodland trees in exquisite detail. Her work ruminates on the impacts of crop farming on local ecosystems while honoring the beauty of a vanishing native landscape. \n“Traces of a Prairie” will run from August 17th to October 20th. Celebrate the Opening Reception with us on Saturday\, August 17th from 6:00 – 8:00 pm. The first 100 guests will receive native plant seedlings courtesy of the artist\, and all guests may also take home free seeds and instructions from Prairie Moon Nursery in Winona. \nThrough creating detailed\, large-scale drawings of dormant\, native prairie plants\, as well as fallen segments of trees\, Lois Peterson recognizes the vital role they hold in maintaining a critical balance in our natural environment. Creating the series of drawings in “Traces of a Prairie” has allowed her to mourn these native plants’ diminishing existence. Through both the act of drawing and the act of restoring land\, she is acquiring an understanding of her place and identity as a rural artist\, as a person with an agricultural history\, and as a person aware of an ecosystem in need of help. \nThe imagery found in Lois Peterson’s art comes to her slowly over the course of several years\, or perhaps more accurately\, over the course of a lifetime. Peterson grew up in a fourth-generation farming family and now recognizes her family’s history regarding the devastation inflicted on prairies and woodlands. She grew up in a time when slight consideration was given to what had existed on the land before her family’s own personal fields of corn\, hay\, and oats. She was already deep into adulthood when she realized that her family\, including herself\, had financially gained roots through the plowing under of prairies and the cutting down of woodlands. Recognizing the negative impacts of farming practices was inevitable. \nOver the years\, Peterson has alternated between abstract/formal pieces and the mostly representational work found in the “Traces of a Prairie” series. Through the act of drawing\, she tries to find a current of meaning\, frequently encountering the limits of her understanding in the process. \nFor the past ten years\, Peterson has been engaged with reintroducing a small prairie and planting native trees on her land in Dakota\, Minnesota along the banks of the Mississippi River. The value of natural prairies for our ecosystems is always in her thoughts when she is engaged with drawing. \nAlways free and open to the public\, the Lanesboro Arts Exhibition Gallery is open Tuesday – Saturday\, 10 am – 5 pm. \nFeatured Image: Traces by Lois Peterson \nLois Peterson is a fiscal year 2024 recipient of a Creative Individuals grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board. This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board.

\nFor the past ten years\, Peterson has been engaged with reintroducing a small prairie and planting native trees on her own land in Dakota\, Minnesota along the banks of the Mississippi River. The value of natural prairies for our ecosystems is always in her thoughts when she is engaged with drawing. \nAlways free and open to the public\, the Lanesboro Arts Exhibition Gallery is open Tuesday – Saturday\, 10 am – 5 pm plus Sundays from 11 am – 3 pm through August 31st. \nFeatured Image: detail from Listening to the Prairie #1 by Lois Peterson \nLois Peterson is a fiscal year 2024 recipient of a Creative Individuals grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board. This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board.

There will also be complimentary refreshments and live music by local musician Paul Schmidt. \nAs an impressionist landscape oil painter Kat Nottingham is inspired by the beauty of the natural world and the fleeting moments of light and color that illuminate it. Delia will share about her creative investigation into slab pottery\, and display the resulting work. \nThis activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through the Minnesota State Arts Board and a grant from the Southeastern Minnesota Arts Council (SEMAC) thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts & cultural heritage fund. \nAbout the Project: Exploring Ceramic Slab Vessels\n \nDelia’s interest in constructing pottery with slabs was sparked by the ability to make rectilinear forms. Slab pottery is created from flat sheets of clay which are cut and joined together. Various factors such as slab size\, drying time\, weight\, folds\, and angles all impact the final structure of a piece. Much of her other ceramic work is thrown on a pottery wheel\, which results in curvilinear forms. This makes her exploration of slab pottery a new frontier in her personal artistic practice. \nAbout SEMAC: \nOn March 21\, 2023\, the Board of Directors of the Southeastern Minnesota Arts Council (SEMAC) awarded 36 grants for a total of $143\,810 in funding to applicants throughout southeastern Minnesota. This included four school residency grants for $11\,810\, fourteen emerging artist grants for $42\,000\, and eighteen advancing artist grants for $90\,000. Delia Bell received an Emerging Artist Grant grant\, and has spent the past year exploring ceramic slab vessel pottery.\n \nSEMAC is the State Arts Board-designated granting authority for local/regional arts producing and sponsoring organizations and disburses funds allocated for this purpose by the Minnesota State Legislature. The SEMAC region includes the counties of Dodge\, Fillmore\, Freeborn\, Goodhue\, Houston\, Mower\, Olmsted\, Rice\, Steele\, Wabasha\, and Winona. \nFor information about the grant application process\, eligibility\, or grant writing assistance\, contact the SEMAC office at 2778 D Commerce Dr. NW\, Rochester\, MN 55901 or call 507-281-4848. SUMMARY:Opening Reception for “How I See Now” Paintings by Eddie Hamilton
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate the opening of “How I See Now\,” an exhibition of paintings by Eddie Hamilton\, on Saturday\, February 3 from 6:00 – 8:00 pm. Stop into the Lanesboro Arts Exhibition Gallery to see Hamilton’s paintings and visit with the artists himself! There will also be complimentary refreshments and live music. \nAbout the show: \nLanesboro Arts presents “How I See Now\,” an exhibition of paintings by Eddie Hamilton at the Lanesboro Arts Exhibition Gallery. “How I See Now” is a collection of layered\, impressionistic paintings that showcase diverse landscapes that share a unique sensory connection. These paintings are inextricably tied to Eddie’s decision to stop using alcohol. In doing so\, he experienced a newfound\, heightened sensory and emotional connection to the natural world around him. As Eddie says\, “I see\, hear\, and smell more in nature than I ever have. They are more than just paintings of nature but the symbol of my fresh start in life.” \nThis show will run from February 3rd to March 31st. \nEddie Hamilton’s artistic influences range from post-impressionists like Gaugin and Serusier to contemporaries like Haring. He paints both with “the intent of evoking a feeling of awe from nature but also capturing a pure and impressionistic feel that gives the image the essence of the fragility of nature and the absurd joy I get from being a part of it all”. \nChange has always been a part of Eddie Hamilton’s painting process. Over the years\, Eddie has used acrylic paint due to the rugged quickness his paintings demanded. Now working in oil paints\, his work and approach have softened. Change and exploring new ways of making paintings are his joy. Currently\, he paints landscapes of Minnesota from traditional scenes to topographical depictions. \nEddie started painting landscapes six years ago\, about the time he stopped drinking. One of the results was an unexpected change in perspective. The phrase “you are good enough” was particularly profound and consistently returned to him. “You are good enough” opened his eyes about what he could do. At the same time\, Eddie found himself outside more and more\, staring at nature in wonder. He loved the mundane in the color of the gray skies\, the still woods\, and the everyday surprises of being outdoors. \nEddie’s current obsession is the beauty in the mundane – in life and art. He intentionally pays attention to the spaces that are often overlooked in our landscapes and pulls these spaces forward. His painting doesn’t depict landmarks or famous views\, but the space between that holds the land together. Eddie has paintings of the shadows\, of the swampy shores of a small pond\, and of prairie grasses’ subtle movement in the breeze. \nAlways free and open to the public\, the Lanesboro Arts Exhibition Gallery is open Wednesday – Saturday\, 10 am – 5 pm in February and March\, 2024. \n \nFebruary 4 – 11\, 2024 | Winona MN \nThis exhibit is sponsored by the Frozen River Film Festival\, which runs from February 4-11\, 2024 in Winona\, MN and made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a Minnesota State Arts Board Operating Support grant\, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund. For more information visit www.lanesboroarts.org\, call 507-467-2446 or email gallery@lanesboroarts.org. Handicapped accessible and free to the public\, the exhibition gallery is located at 103 Parkway Avenue North in Lanesboro\, MN.
