SUMMARY:Exhibition Opening for “Take Me to the River”
DESCRIPTION:Lanesboro Arts presents “Take Me to the River”\, an exhibition showcasing over thirty artists interpretations of “Water” in this year’s annual group art show. The show opens on Saturday\, June 4th with an artist reception from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m.; the show runs through August 7th. There will be hors d’oeuvres and beverages that visitors can enjoy inside and outside of the Gallery\, as well as live music. Come on out for a celebratory evening of art and community! \nAbout the exhibition: \nAs an essential ingredient in many artistic mediums and techniques\, water propels both the work of a potter’s wheel and the brush on a gouache landscape. As subject matter\, water is also ubiquitous. The sea is represented as both tranquil and formidable in plein air seascapes. And water fuels many brutalist fountains and kinetic sculptures. The Lanesboro Arts Summer group show challenged entrants to represent/present water – still or dynamic – in a fresh way — either as a medium or as subject matter. \nThere were nearly 200 pieces entered for consideration. A few dozen pieces made the final cut. “It was heartening to see so many exceptional entries\,” said Gallery and Communications Director\, Kris Viesselman. “The show will be a dynamic mix of both 2-D and 3-D pieces from traditional to more contemporary. There’s something for everyone.” \nExhibit sponsor: Merchant’s Bank in Lanesboro\, MN \n \nTake Me to the River is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a Minnesota State Arts Board grant\, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.

SUMMARY:Exhibition Opening for “A Few Steps Ahead”
DESCRIPTION:Lanesboro Arts presents “A Few Steps Ahead”\, an exhibition showcasing print-maker and painter Amy Rice. The show opens on Saturday\, March 26th with an artist reception from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m.; the show runs through May 29th. There will be hors d’oeuvres and non-alcoholic beverages that visitors can enjoy outside in front of the Gallery\, as well as live music. Come on out for a celebratory evening of art and community! \nAbout the Exhibition: \nIn 2010\, Amy Rice’s art was featured on the Minnesota Public Television series Minnesota Original. In the interview she stated that she was making a creative shift from painting her present and past to painting what Rice wanted her future to look like\, which at the time included having a cabin on a lake with a swan paddle boat and big gardens. It’s been 10 years since that feature and Rice has the cabin. It’s tiny and on a creek and not a lake\, and she’s still looking for that elusive swan paddle boat\, but she does in fact have the big gardens. \nRice describes this approach as such: “Much of my current work is my to-do list and my stretch goals. I am a wanna-be-flower-farmer. I’m not satisfied anymore with a big garden; I want acres of stripes of living colors. I want my fields to be my canvas and flowers to be my paint. Slowly\, year by hard working year it’s happening. My paintings are just a few steps ahead of my reality.” \nRice’s work is deeply layered\, often both literally and figuratively. Her imagery–nostalgic and wistful–is largely biographical and reflective of her pensive nature. The artist uses nontraditional print-making methods — including hand cut stencils and a 1980s Japanese screen printing toy called a Gocco printer — as a starting point for original mixed media pieces. Rice uses enamel spray paint\, acrylics\, gouache\, and inks\, and print on a variety of surfaces including wood\, fabric and antique papers (preferring handwritten love letters\, envelopes\, journal pages\, sheet music and maps). \nThis exhibit is sponsored by Inspire(d) Media and is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a Minnesota State Arts Board Operating Support grant\, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund. For more information visit www.lanesboroarts.org\, call 507-467-2446 or email gallery@lanesboroarts.org. Handicapped accessible and free to the public\, the exhibition gallery is located at 103 Parkway Avenue North in Lanesboro\, MN.  \nAlways free and open to the public\, gallery hours are Tuesday – Saturday\, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.

SUMMARY:Exhibition Opening for “Home: Exploring\, Mending\, Reimagining”
DESCRIPTION:Lanesboro Arts presents “Home: Exploring\, Mending\, Reimagining”\, a quilt exhibition showcasing community embroidery and quilt project led by Cecilia Cornejo. The show opens on Saturday\, January 29th with an artist reception from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m.; the show runs through March 20th. There will be live music and remarks from Cecilia Cornejo and community members. Come on out for a celebratory evening of art and community! Cecilia came to Lanesboro\, along with her ongoing\, multiplatform project\, The Wandering House\, in the fall of 2019 as an Artist-in-Residence through Lanesboro Arts. A former ice-fishing house turned into a mobile audio-recording studio\, The Wandering House offered Lanesboro residents the chance to reflect and record their thoughts on home as well as their hopes for the community. \nThe current exhibition features the Lanesboro Community Quilt which is based on audio testimonies responding to the prompt “I Know I’m Home When…” These audio fragments were subsequently embroidered by 25 community members—artists and enthusiasts alike—working\nin close collaboration with Cecilia in the fall of 2020. More recently\, over summer and fall of 2021\, these fragments were thoughtfully arranged by Renee Bergstrom\, Heidi Dybing\, and Cheryl Lamont into the quilt you see today. \nFind out more about the exhibition here.  \nThis exhibit is sponsored by F & M Community Bank. This exhibit is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a Minnesota State Arts Board Operating Support grant\, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund. SUMMARY:Exhibition Opening for "Dappled: Growing Up With Shadow and Light"
DESCRIPTION:Lanesboro Arts presents “Dappled: Growing Up With Shadow and Light”\, an exhibition showcasing ceramics by Kordula Coleman. The show opens on Saturday\, October 23rd with an artist reception  from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m.; the show runs through December 10th.  There will be hors d’oeuvres and non-alcoholic beverages that visitors can enjoy outside in front of the Gallery\, as well as live music. Come on out for a celebratory evening of art and community! \nAbout the Exhibition: \nThis body of work visualizes Coleman’s experience of being raised by parents with severe trauma caused by living in Germany during WWII and it’s aftermath. The collection is a monument to Coleman’s childhood and origin family and also to trauma survivors’ courage. The ceramics are a physical reminder of how wars affect generations of families\, long after the war itself is over. \nKordula Coleman is a figurative ceramic sculptor who lives and works in Northeast Minneapolis. After immigrating to the US in 2000 from Cologne\, Germany\, Coleman rekindled her love for sculpting with clay. Coleman started sculpting at an early age and is a ceramic journeyman. More information can be found on Coleman’s website: http://www.kordulacolemansculptures.com/ \nFind out more about the exhibition here.  \nThis exhibit is sponsored by KTTC and is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a Minnesota State Arts Board Operating Support grant\, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund. Always free and open to the public\, gallery hours are Tuesday – Saturday\, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. and Sunday 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. \nThis body of work visualizes Coleman’s experience of being raised by parents with severe trauma caused by living in Germany during WWII and it’s aftermath. The collection is a monument to Coleman’s childhood and origin family and also to trauma survivors’ courage. The ceramics are a physical reminder of how wars affect generations of families\, long after the war itself is over. \nAs Coleman says\, “It is both disturbing and healing for me to go to that place\, but I feel that it is important for me to figure out how their trauma has shaped me\, and honor the love\, warmth and positivity [my parents] were still able to give to their children. I also hope that turning these memories into sculptures and thus sharing them with the world will help others open up about similar experiences\, and start valuable and instructive conversations.” \nColeman’s sculptural work focuses on human nature and the human body. This focus results in gestural\, emotional creations that tell the viewer stories through the sculpture’s poses\, facial features\, gestures\, or clothing characteristics. Much time and care is spent on facial features especially\, creating emotional depth to Coleman’s work. More information can be found on Coleman’s website: http://www.kordulacolemansculptures.com/ \nThis exhibit is sponsored by KTTC and is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a Minnesota State Arts Board Operating Support grant\, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund. SUMMARY:"My Wild and Precious Life" Artist Reception and Mural Launch
DESCRIPTION:Lanesboro Arts presents “My Wild and Precious Life”\, an exhibition showcasing paintings by Kat Corrigan. The show opens on August 27th with an artist reception on Saturday\, August 28th from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m.; the show runs through October 17th.  Inspired by the beauty of everyday objects and literary works\, Corrigan found the exhibition title in Mary Oliver’s poem “The Summer Day”; the exhibition itself will feature paintings of animals\, landscapes and water scenes. \nLanesboro Arts is also celebrating the completion of the Parkway Place Mural Project\, as well as launching the Little Free Art Library created by the Lanesboro Girl Scout Troop. Stop by the Gallery to tour the exhibition and then walk across the street to view the Parkway Place Mural and Little Free Art Library! There will be hors d’oeuvres and non-alcoholic beverages that visitors can enjoy in Parkway Place (across the street from the Gallery). There will be live music from Anne and Andy Lowe from 6 – 8 p.m. in Parkway Place. Come on out for a celebratory evening of art and community! \nAbout the Exhibition: \nThrough Corrigan’s paintings\, viewers are invited to enter a universe that is sharp and alive with color\, vibrates with movement\, lights the imagination\, and offers sanctuary from daily human complication. Corrigan has been painting for over twenty years and nearly daily since 2010. Her work carries impressionistic qualities through the way brush strokes and layers of paint embody her subject. \n“Painting is an act of meditation and joy for me.  It is the negative space around familiar forms that intrigues me- how to properly depict that curve of kinked tail\, the twist in an ear\, the slant of sunlight on fallen snow.  I thrill to take a common subject such as a dog and elevate it to an abstraction of color and light. My work is translating the focus of a soul into brushstrokes\, attempting to depict in pigment what is written in an eye\,” explains Corrigan. \nAward-winning Minneapolis-based artist Kat Corrigan’s formal art training began at a young age through the direction of her mother\, an art teacher and exhibiting artist. Corrigan graduated from the College of St. Benedict with a BA in Art\, including a semester of independent study in Ireland painting watercolors. She is active in the Women’s Art Resources of Minnesota (WARM) and participates annually in the Women’s Art  Institute in Grand Marais\, MN at the Art Colony. She exhibits her paintings throughout  the metro area and actively seeks gallery representation and private commissions. Her work has won awards and recognition in juried shows throughout the United States and  has been widely collected both in the US and in England\, Australia\, Japan\, Wales\, and Lebanon. Corrigan teaches painting lessons from her South Minneapolis studio. \nThis exhibit is sponsored by Inspire(d) Magazine and is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a Minnesota State Arts Board Operating Support grant\, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund. Always free and open to the public\, gallery hours are Tuesday – Saturday from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. For more information visit www.lanesboroarts.org\, call 507-467-2446 or email gallery@lanesboroarts.org. Handicapped accessible and free to the public\, the exhibition gallery is located at 103 Parkway Avenue North in Lanesboro\, MN. \nAbout the Parkway Place Mural: \nLanesboro Arts and the City of Lanesboro proudly announce the completion of the Parkway Place Mural Project in downtown Lanesboro. Parkway Place\, located in the gravel lot on Parkway Ave in downtown Lanesboro\, is a central hub of activity for locals and visitors alike. Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic\, Parkway Place increasingly became a destination for outdoor seating for patrons of area restaurants\, businesses and the bike trail. Lanesboro Arts partnered with Lanesboro Area Chamber of Commerce\, Lanesboro Economic Development Authority\, and private property owner Andy Bunge to carry out the Parkway Place Mural project with the goal to activate a previously vacant space into a vibrant gathering space in the center of downtown. The Parkway Place Project included other updates to the space\, including freshly painted picnic tables thanks to the Lanesboro Boy Scouts\, flower planters\, shade tents\, and ambient evening lighting. \nThe mural features brightly colored flowers\, leaves\, the sun\, and the Root River all framing big block letters that spell out “Lanesboro.” It is 6 feet tall by 32 feet wide and was installed on weatherproof plywood attached to the fence in Parkway Place. The design was created by Lanesboro Arts Administrative Intern\, Kiara Hohn. Kiara is a recent graduate with a visual art degree from Luther College specializing in painting. \nThe Parkway Place Project is partially funded by the Lanesboro Community Foundation with additional support from Lanesboro Arts.

SUMMARY:"Heartbeats" Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Lanesboro Arts presents “Heartbeats” an exhibition featuring the work of Viroqua\, WI based artist Kathie Wheeler. The show opens on June 19th – August 15th. Always free and open to the public\, gallery hours are Wednesday – Sunday\, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. \nWhile Kathie is known for her landscape plein air work\, this unique exhibition focuses exclusively on figurative paintings. This expressive series celebrate people from different backgrounds. Kathie hopes the paintings prompt heartfelt reactions from viewers as they uncover universal themes of humanity. As Kathie explains\, “I try to put the feeling or emotion I see in a place or person on the canvas.  My hope is that the viewer can take some of that away with them.” \nKathie describes her process as such: “I count myself fortunate to be an artist. My paintings reflect the scenes and people in my daily life and many are begun or painted entirely on location or from life. Painting “en plein air” is filled with both challenges and great pleasure. No day is ever the same\,” explains Wheeler. “And so\, I join the long history of adventurers who translate the beauty of their surroundings onto canvas with brushes and paint. It gives me great pleasure to share these moments in time with those who live with my paintings in their lives.” \nKathie was born in 1962 and was raised in the Chicago area. As a young woman\, she studied at the American Academy of Art\, where she won the prestigious Union Art League Scholarship Competition\, then worked as a freelance commercial artist and portrait artist. \nKathie creates remarkable landscapes and portraits and works primarily with a rich oil  palette\, but also enjoys dabbling in pastel\, watercolor.  She paints plein air throughout the year\, as well as working in the studio. Kathie and her husband reside on a small farm in southwest Wisconsin. \nSponsored by Commonweal Theatre: \n \nThis exhibit is sponsored by Commonweal Theatre and made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a Minnesota State Arts Board Operating Support grant\, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund. SUMMARY:"Divided Light" Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Lanesboro Arts presents “Divided Light”\, an exhibition showcasing oil paintings and stained glass paintings by Adam Reef. The show opens on April 10th and runs through June 13th. Always free and open to the public\, gallery hours are Thursday – Sunday\, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. \nThe exhibit title references Reef’s two bodies of work—oil painting and stained glass painting—and how each relate and differ in their use of light. Through stained glass especially\, viewers experience a different piece of art depending on time of day and type of light shining through. Reef approaches stained glass with a painterly approach that lends itself to a wholly unique art form. \nReef describes his process as such: “Oil painting and glass painting both deal with the transmission of light. My oil paintings use a lot of opaque and transparent layers of pigment to change and intensify color. Glass works in a similar way with layers of opaque blacks and transparent colored enameled applied to clear or colored glass. It’s been really interesting to find how oil and glass techniques are interrelated.” \nReef hopes viewers will enjoy the visual stories he tells through is mediums. As he describes it\, “The best pictures are the ones that you can puzzle over and imagine the story\, or maybe imagine several stories all at once.” This correlates to the long history of stained glass being used as a visual storyteller through symbols\, characters\, and decoration. \nReef has a BFA in painting (1992) from Indiana University and an MFA in painting (1999) from the University of Minnesota. He uses art to make sense of the world and to inspire others. He has been an oil painter for most of his adult life\, and more recently has switched to glass painting. You can find out more about his work on his website. \nThis exhibit is sponsored by F & M Community Bank and is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a Minnesota State Arts Board Operating Support grant\, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund. SUMMARY:"Gone But Never Forgotten: Remembering Those Lost to Police Brutality" Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Lanesboro Arts presents “Gone But Never Forgotten: Remembering Those Lost to Police Brutality“ Exhibition featuring 21 quilts curated by Carolyn Mazloomi. This exhibition is part of Textile Center and Women of Color Quilters Network’s “We Are the Story” initiative. The show opens February 13 and runs through April 1 2021. Always free and open to the public\, gallery hours are Thursday-Sunday\, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. \n“Gone But Never Forgotten: Remembering Those Lost to Police Brutality” is a national juried exhibition showcasing 21 quilts that honor those whose lives were violently ended due to police negligence and brutality and critiques the targeting and criminalization of Black bodies throughout history. The “We Are the Story” initiative is group and solo exhibitions that build upon symbols of liberation\, resistance and empowerment\, offering a visually compelling account of the breadth of experiences and struggles that comprise Black history in an honest and critical way. \nWhen Minneapolis became the epicenter of the nationwide protest movement against police brutality and racism in America following the death of George Floyd on May 25\, 2020\, Textile Center and Women of Color Quilters Network (WCQN) joined forces to create “We Are the Story”\, a multi-venue initiative in the Twin Cities\, September 10\, 2020\, through June 12\, 2021. “We Are the Story” is under the curatorial direction of Carolyn Mazloomi\, WCQN founder and member of Textile Center’s National Artist Advisory Council. \n“Gone But Never Forgotten: Remembering Those Lost to Police Brutality” is one of two juried exhibitions that serve as a centerpiece for “We Are the Story”. Given the urgency of these issues in America\, quilters from around the nation worked under an extremely tight creative timeline. The calls were open in mid-June to all artists regardless of age\, color\, national origin\, citizenship status\, race\, religion\, creed\, gender\, sexual orientation\, gender identity in mid-June\, and 423 quilts were submitted by the July 31 deadline. Mazloomi selected 89 quilts for the two exhibitions. \nAbout The Women Of Color Quilters Network (WCQN): For African American women quilts have always been at the core of artistic expression\, taking form in the social\, economic\, and spiritual lives of the women who make them. Founded by Carolyn Mazloomi in 1985\, WCQN is a non-profit national organization whose mission is to educate\, preserve\, exhibit\, promote and document quilts made by African Americans. WCQN showcases the work of its members through critically acclaimed traveling exhibitions that tour museums throughout the United States\, including the Smithsonian. WCQN has exhibited quilts in Japan\, England\, South African\, Italy and Australia as part of art programs sponsored by the United States Department of State. For more information\, visit: wcqn.org.  \nAbout Carolyn Mazloomi: Historian\, curator\, author\, lecturer\, artist\, mentor\, founder\, and facilitator — the remarkable and tireless Carolyn Mazloomi has left her mark on many lives. Trained as an aerospace engineer\, she turned her sites and tireless efforts in the 1980s to bring the many unrecognized contributions of African American quilt artists to the attention of the American people as well as the international art communities. From the founding of the African-American Quilt Guild of Los Angles in 1981 to the 1985 founding of the WCQN\, Carolyn has been at the forefront of educating the public about the diversity of interpretation\, styles and techniques among African American quilters as well as educating a younger generation of African Americans about their own history through the quilts the WCQN members create.   \nA major force as an artist in her own right\, Carolyn’s quilts can be found in private collections around the world as well in distinguished museum collections in the United States. To date she has published 12 books highlighting African American-made quilts. Her artistic work\, as well as her defense of solid research\, has disrupted long-standing myths about African American quilts\, myths much debated among quilt historians and quilters alike\, and thus moved the conversation about African American quilt history forward to more a solid academic footing. For more information\, visit: carolynmazloomi.com.  \nAbout Textile Center: Textile Center is unique as America’s national center for fiber art\, with a mission to honor textile traditions\, promote excellence and innovation\, and inspire widespread participation in fiber arts. The Center’s resources include exceptional fiber art exhibitions\, an artisan shop\, a professional-grade dye lab\, a natural dye plant garden\, and one of the nation’s largest circulating textile libraries open to the public. Textile Center produces more than 200 classes a year for all ages and skill levels through its youth\, adult\, older adult\, and outreach programs. A dynamic hub of fiber activity for 25 years\, Textile Center brings people together in community to learn\, create\, share\, and be inspired by fiber art. textilecentermn.org.  \nThis exhibition is part of Textile Center and Women of Color Quilters Network’s We Are the Story initiative. This exhibit is sponsored by Commonweal Theatre and is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a Minnesota State Arts Board Operating Support grant\, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund. SUMMARY:2021 Juried High School Show
DESCRIPTION:Lanesboro Arts is proud to present the Annual Juried High School Art Show\, showcasing artworks by 9-12th grade students from Chatfield\, Fillmore Central\, Lanesboro\, and Rushford-Peterson High Schools. The show opens on January 16th and runs through February 7th. Always free and open to the public\, gallery hours are Thursday – Saturday\, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. The show features a variety of art projects\, including those in ceramics\, acrylics\, pastels\, ink\, pencil\, photography\, and mixed media sculpture. \nEach year\, the high school exhibition gives young artists the chance to showcase their artwork in a professional gallery setting. This year however\, as students adapt to distanced learning and all the changes associated with COVID-19\, the road to showing their work has looked a little different. As Fillmore Central art teacher Carrie Mathison says\, “Kids are bridging that gap between home and school\, which is a hard thing to do.” According to Mathison\, teachers have had to adapt to accommodate these new styles of learning\, “I’ve tried to make my classroom more like home\, because a lot of kids create at home\, but there are also lot of kids that don’t.” Mathison also notes that a lot of the student works are still in progress as students continue to adjust to new styles of learning. \nThe shift towards hybrid learning has brought about some positive change as well: “[The students] are becoming good problem solvers through COVID-19\, and innovative thinkers\,” Chatfield art instructor Abbey Potter notes. Potter observes the way distanced learning has encouraged creativity and collaboration\, “We’re hybrid right now\, so we’re half at home half at school. It’s made for some really small class sizes\, which is actually really nice because they’re collaborating with each other more. They’re becoming closer with one another\, which is nice to see.” Lanesboro art teacher Stena Lieb has also noticed a change in the way students structure their artistic practice\, ““They have to plan out what they want to learn on their own\, because I can’t have the same classes I normally would.” Lanesboro Student Brooke Lambrecht shared how COVID-19 has allowed for extra time to work on her artwork\, “I had a lot of time during quarantine this spring to work on art and create paintings for school. I mainly worked from vintage photographs or ads. I am so excited to be a part of this show!” \nFor many young artists\, this years show is especially meaningful and creates a community of artists that’s been hard to find these days. Lieb explains\, “They haven’t had a chance for anyone to see their artwork this year…. Because students aren’t passing and moving around like they normally would throughout the school\, I have 7th and 8th graders that haven’t seen my senior’s artwork like they normally would.” Due to hybrid learning\, the students have fewer opportunities to display their work in ways other than digitally. Again Mathison says\, ““To have something to physically show off or to present\, a lot of students are very excited for that.” \nFilmore Central Student Adrik Nevalainen speaks to the cathartic power of art making during these stressful times\, “I know this year has been rough for a lot of people\, including myself. But It’s nice to know that even in times like these\, we can all come together and share our art with each other. Thank you to the Lanesboro Art Gallery for making this all possible. And thank you to my art teacher for admitting me for another year. I’m looking forward to it.”

SUMMARY:"You Are Here" Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Lanesboro Arts presents “You Are Here”\, an exhibition featuring the work from Twin Cities-based painter Sarah Nicole Knutson. The show opens on Saturday\, October 24 and runs through December 20\, 2020. This collection of surreal watercolor urban and suburban landscapes offers a reflective experience for the viewer. Knutson is drawn to the concepts of falling apart and coming together. Using these concepts\, Knutson uses water to abstract and push the “paper and paint to their limit as pigment breaks apart and paper begins to warp – transforming the image into an object.” \nPainting from either her memory or exploratory photographs\, Knutson’s abstracted monochromatic landscapes create a sense of space and pause that prompts inner dialogue and reflection in the viewer. The intimacy of her work invites closeness with the viewer that reveals an inventive complexity. Her emphasis on an overall beautiful but poignant aesthetic seduces a sense of empathy or thoughtfulness for a suggested human presence. \nTwin Cities-based artist Sarah Nicole Knutson specializes in quiet contemporary watercolor painting and bodily sculpture. Sarah received a BFA in Painting and Drawing from the Minneapolis College of Art & Design in 2018. She currently works at the Minneapolis based gallery\, Public Functionary\, and maintains a studio practice in Studio 400 as an artist and space manager. Sarah produces exhibition opportunities and community events at various pop-up locations\, taking inspiration from her contemporary research through an east coast lens. She participates as an artist and curator annually during Miami art week in conjunction with Art Basel. \nCOVID-19 Update: The health of our visitors\, staff\, and volunteers is at the forefront of our minds at Lanesboro Arts. We have taken precautions to ensure the safety of our customers. Masks are required in the Gallery\, and visitors are limited to one social unit in the Gallery at one time. The Lanesboro Arts Gallery is open to the public on Wednesday through Sunday from 10 am – 5 pm through October; and is open Thursday through Sunday from 10 am – 5 pm in November and December. \nThis exhibit is sponsored by KTTC and is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a Minnesota State Arts Board Operating Support grant\, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund. For more information visit www.lanesboroarts.org\, call 507-467-2446 or email gallery@lanesboroarts.org. Handicapped accessible and free to the public\, the exhibition gallery is located at 103 Parkway Avenue North in Lanesboro\, MN.

SUMMARY:"Anthropocene" Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Lanesboro Arts presents “Anthropocene” Exhibition featuring the work from ceramicist Glynnis Lessing. The show opens with a reception on Saturday\, August 22 from 5-7 p.m.\, and runs through October 18\, 2020. Always free and open to the public\, gallery hours are Friday-Sunday\, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. \nIn regard to her artistic inspiration\, she explains\, “…the surface decoration is often a reflection of my love of nature and the profound restorative power of being outside. I want to share the pleasure I take in noticing the pattern of leaves\, how a bird balances on a reed\, the silhouettes of trees just after sundown. These things will nourish just like the food that is served or made in my pots.” \nAs Glynnis states\, “Humans are possibly unique in being capable of appreciating the beauty of this world and also taking that appreciation and interpreting it; re-imagining it\, into art which is\, in turn\, beautiful and also communicates our experience of living on this planet.” \nGlynnis was raised mostly in the Midwest and learned to throw when she was 10.  After some coursework at MacAlester College in St. Paul\, Minnesota\, she got her BFA  at the University of Minnesota\, Minneapolis. Her work has always been mostly functional high-fire and she has worked more and more with slipped surface decoration. Much of Glynnis’ work is sgraffito on thrown porcelain but not exclusively so. Glynnis has taught at the Northern Clay Center and the Northfield Arts Guild. \nSponsored by Inspire(d) Magazine:\n \nThis exhibit is sponsored by Inspire(d) Magazine made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a Minnesota State Arts Board Operating Support grant\, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund. SUMMARY:"On The Fly" Group Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Lanesboro Arts presents “On The Fly\,” a juried group exhibition of work by mixed media artists inspired by fly fishing. The exhibit opens June 13 runs through August 16\, 2020.  Always free and open to the public\, the Lanesboro Arts Gallery is open on the weekends (Friday – Sunday)\, from 10 am to 5 pm. \nCOVID-19 Update: The health of our artists\, community members\, visitors\, staff\, and volunteers is at the forefront of our minds at Lanesboro Arts. To ensure the continued health and safety of both Lanesboro Arts staff and the visitor\, masks are required during your visit\, and we will be limiting the number of people who can be in the gallery at once. \nThis special fly fishing-inspired gallery exhibition will feature work from artists Josh DeSmit\, Charlie Forbes\, Ted Hansen\, Jake Keeler\, Paul Lambrect\, Gary Liubakka and Steve Sobieniak. Lanesboro and it’s surrounding streams and rivers have become destinations for fly fishers from around the state. Inspired by Root River Rod company and this growing form of outdoor tourism\, this show will feature different artist’s perspectives on our natural world through the lens of fly fishing. \nAs exhibition artist Ted C. Hansen says\, “Fly fishing and art will always have a lot of overlap. Both require a keen understanding of what is going on around oneself. There are hidden patterns that can be revealed through careful observation or sharing of knowledge. Sometimes a slow and patient approach is needed and at other times you have to race ahead\, improvise\, and keep things loose. And success in never guaranteed.” \nFeatured Artists Include:  \nJosh DeSmit is an obsessed artist\, trout bum\, and fly tier. He is also an avid hunter\, outdoorsman\, and former professional and collegiate hockey player. Josh grew up and still lives in Minneapolis\, MN. He learned to trout fish and read water on the pocket riddled brook trout streams of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula where his family owns a cabin. This combination of city life and wilderness adventure has become the foundation for Josh’s artistic style. \nCharlie Forbes resides in Saint Paul\, MN with his wife and two kids. A tattoo veteran of over 20 years\, Charlie runs and owns Stone Arch Tattoo and Company at the foot of the historic Stone Arch Bridge in Minneapolis. His specialty is fish and wildlife related art and tattoo work. Lapidary and Environmental Conservation are other  passions of his as well as road trip adventures with his family. \nThe work of Ted C. Hansen is strongly rooted in the natural world.  He grew up on a small farm outside of the town of Dillon\, Montana.  It was here that he developed his lifelong passion for art\, fly fishing and spending time in the wilderness. He now lives and works in the Arts District of northeast Minneapolis and continues to discover the wild spaces and fishing opportunities of the upper midwest. Hansen works in a wide range and media and styles and specializes in oil and acrylic painting. While continually exploring new subjects\, much of his work is focused on the subjects of landscapes and fish. \nJake Keeler is a Minnesota based artist and avid fly fisherman. He grew up learning to fish on the Mississippi River\, while spending the rest of my free time drawing. Jake has an MFA in painting and drawing from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. His work has been shown all over the U.S. and has been used by outdoor apparel and gear companies like Simms and Patagonia. As Jake says\, “I’m active in conservation and advocacy efforts involving clean water\, public lands\, and positive community building; I use my art to not only raise awareness about these issues\, but also raise money by donating at least 30% of the revenue made from my art to various organizations fighting for clean water and environmental protection.” \nLanesboro resident Paul Lambrect has been a wood sculpture artist for over 30 years. His work consists of flowing sculptures hand carved from basswood. They are painted with acrylics and stains and finished with lacquer. Most of his sculptures are recognizable forms and objects and they all have a hidden message. He has exhibited his sculptures at many of the best fine craft shows in America. \nAs an outdoorsman and naturalist\, Gary Liubakka has incorporated his passion and patience for fly fishing into a number of art methods including quill pen and ink drawings\, plein air sketching\, acrylic painting. In order to expand art forms\, he has pursued modern technologies such as laser engraving at the Iron Range Makerspace. Gary teaches art at the Borealis Art Guild and lives in Hibbing. He has had artwork published in outdoor magazines even the prestigious Trout Unlimited. \nSteve Sobieniak has been building and repairing custom bamboo rods for over 12 years. He hopes that decades from now\, someone will pick up a fly rod he made\, cast it\, admire how it wafts out line in gentle curls and appreciate its lithe grace and bamboo beauty. It’s a passion he brought to the area when he opened Root River Rod Co. in 2017 in downtown Lanesboro. Sobieniak’s rods begin at $1\,000 and take at least 50 hours to make. Bamboo rods have something special about them\, something that intrigues him. “It has a whole different feel to it\, it’s slower\,” he said. “It’s a sense of pride. You make something out of a raw material.” \nThis exhibit is sponsored by F & M Community Bank and made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a Minnesota State Arts Board Operating Support grant\, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.

SUMMARY:POSTPONED: After Hours Gallery Artist Meet & Greet
DESCRIPTION:Lanesboro Arts invites arts enthusiasts of all ages to an After Hours Meet and Greet with juried sales gallery artists Clay Cunningham\, Michael Farrell\, Bradly Hall\, Diane Knight and Sue Pariseau on Friday\, May 15 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Food and drinks will be provided! Each artist will speak for 5 minutes about their work before opening things up for informal discussion and conversation with attendees. This event is intended to be a fun and casual opportunity for visitors to learn more about the minds and techniques of these four talented juried sales gallery artists. \n\nClay Cunningham is continually intrigued by the wonderful material of clay.  It exists in dualities of soft and hard\, smooth and rough\, resilient yet fragile.  Exploring classical forms with modern surfaces is at the center of his work. Clay’s artwork is inspired by a multitude of muses\, but mostly just a love for hard work and constant exploration.   He is not interested in making ground-breaking work that begs for attention.  Instead\, he is concerned with making a fine hand-crafted object that has spent hours of loving attention in his hands.  Much of his work contains materials dug locally in the Loess Hills of Southwest Iowa.  These pieces contain a permanent connection with the legacy of the area’s local history. \n\n\nMichael Farrell began his love of painting while studying Wildlife Management at Montana State University. As he would walk the fields and streams\, he began to feel the beauty around him and was moved to capture these images in paint. Michael moved to Minnesota in 1983 when he was accepted to study painting in the tradition of Classical Realism. Michael spent two years studying in the Atlier programs. His frequent trips to the Rocky Mountains have furthered his love of Plein Air painting. He brings his sketches from the field\, back to his studio in White Bear Lake\, MN where he continues to work into each piece until he has captured the essence of the landscape. \n\n\nBradly Hall is an artist living and working out of a rehabbed nineteenth century church in Granite Falls.  He carves linoleum blocks\, paints watercolors\, and combines both mediums. He received the majority of his training at the American Academy of Art in Chicago. He creates most of his work from reference photos taken near his home in the upper Minnesota River valley. The river valley and surrounding rural area provide significant inspiration for his work. \n\nDoodling is a rather mindless activity Whalan\, MN artist Diane Knight finds herself doing at meetings\, on the phone and especially when she needs to calm down. One day she tried doodling over a bit of color. She had a lot fun and has not been able to stop since. Diane has a BA in art education\, worked in the art department at Mayo Clinic for 20 years and spent an equal amount of time creating masks and puppets with the Masque Theatre in Rochester\, MN. Since retirement\, she has worked with clay\, started an art gallery with her siblings and learned how to use power tools. She don’t much like to cook so she finds it delightful to have other creative outlets. \n\nSue Pariseau loves making pottery people use in their everyday life – for that first cup of coffee in the morning\, serving the kids favorite meal or sneaking a bowl of ice cream before bed. She believes each of those occasions and so many others are made more joyful when experienced in handmade pottery. Pariseau’s body of work is split between cone 6 oxidation firing and cone 10 wood firing which allows her to create very colorful pots from the electric kiln\, but also some very earthy\, organic looking brown pots from the wood kiln. In 2001\, Pariseau established her home studio in Farmington\, Minnesota which allows her to focus on the techniques and colors that speak to her (though it’s sometimes hard to hear over the music). Shortly after in 2003\, she established Old Crow Studio in the beautiful bluff country of Southeastern Minnesota.

SUMMARY:POSTPONED: "Heartbeats" Exhibition Reception
DESCRIPTION:Lanesboro Arts has made the decision along with the artist Kathie Wheeler to postpone this exhibition from it’s original April 2020 opening until June 2021. This is due to our efforts to keep our community and artists safe during the COVID-19 outbreak. The health of our artists\, community members\, visitors\, staff and volunteers is at the forefront of our minds at Lanesboro Arts. Taking this into account\, March events at the St. Mane Theater have been postponed and the Lanesboro Arts Gallery will be closed to the public until March 31\, 2020\, at which time we will assess the situation to ensure the continued health and safety of the community. \nLanesboro Arts will present “Heartbeats” an exhibition featuring the work of Viroqua\, WI based artist Kathie Wheeler\, in summer of 2021 (dates TBA).  While Kathie is known for her landscape plein air work\, this unique exhibition focuses exclusively on figurative paintings. This expressive series celebrate people from diverse cultural backgrounds\, including a young tattooed woman and her dog\, a same sex couple contemplating their soon-to-be-born child\, and Native American dancers at a powwow. For more information visit www.lanesboroarts.org\, call 507-467-2446 or email gallery@lanesboroarts.org. Handicapped accessible and free to the public\, the exhibition gallery is located at 103 Parkway Avenue North in Lanesboro\, MN.

SUMMARY:2020 Emerging Artist Exhibit Reception
DESCRIPTION:Lanesboro Arts presents the 2020 Emerging Artist Exhibition featuring the artwork of three talent early career artists working in a variety of media: Rose Weselmann\, Alan Wiltgen\, and Sally Podein. The show opens with a reception featuring all artists on Saturday\, February 1\, 2020\, from 6-8 p.m.\, and runs through March 28. The reception will include wine and hors d’oeuvres\, as well as live music by Savvy History (aka Michelle Lynn) of Decorah. Always free and open to the public\, winter gallery hours are Tuesday-Saturday 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. The Emerging Artist Exhibition was developed in 2015 to meet the needs of artists with burgeoning new talent; this juried show provides emerging artists selected in a jury process an opportunity to display work in a professional gallery setting. \nRose Weselmann received her Bachelor of Fine Arts at Luther College in Decorah\, Iowa in 2013. After graduation she moved to the Twin Cities\, residing in both St. Paul and currently in Minneapolis where she explores her passion for the arts. She is now a painter and mixed media artist working out of the Casket Arts Building near her Northeast home where she focuses on process and the exploration of materials and their natural capabilities. Rose describes her process as such: “Each piece begins with a gestural mark or puddle\, settling with unpredictability due to the nature of my materials. The process of laying down marks\, patience in waiting for them to take their final form\, acceptance and flexibility has allowed me to learn to build compositions based on the infusion of spontaneity and intentionality.” \nBased in Minneapolis and originally from Harmony\, Minn.\, Alan Wiltgen’s path as an artist started out with sketching\, primarily with charcoal or ink. From there\, he moved into installation pieces and collage. Five years ago\, Alan picked up a paintbrush. He is primarily self-taught\, although he did take classes under artist Simon Huelsbeck at RCTC. The characters he paints generally bridge the gap between German Expressionism and animated cartoons. German expressionist painters such as Max Beckman and Ernst Ludwig Kirchner have heavily influenced Alan’s work. As he says\, “I continue to paint not only to expand my curiosity and growth as an artist\, but for therapy and meditation. Painting has become a process of communication with creativity. My ego gets to vanish and I get to help something formless come into form.” \nSally Podein is a Minnesota artist who began drawing and painting at a young age. She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from Rutgers University\, New Jersey. After graduating Sally moved to Minnesota where she currently works at Mayo Clinic as a Motion Graphics Designer. She has been creating stained glass mosaics for several years. Her works are mostly of wildlife\, pets and landscapes\, and she says “capturing the character and soul of the animal is very rewarding to me.” As Sally says of her stained glass work “The infinite colors\, shades and textures of glass help me to create depth\, form and detail.” Sally’s work can be found at the SEMVA Gallery in Rochester\, Minnesota. \nThe exhibit is sponsored by the Frozen River Film Festival and made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a Minnesota State Arts Board Operating Support grant\, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund. Handicapped accessible and free to the public\, the exhibition gallery is located at 103 Parkway Ave N. in Lanesboro\, Minnesota. \nSponsored by Frozen River Film Festival:

SUMMARY:2020 Juried High School Art Show Reception
DESCRIPTION:Lanesboro Arts is proud to present the Annual Juried High School Art Show\, showcasing artworks by 9-12th grade students from Chatfield\, Fillmore Central\, Lanesboro\, and Rushford-Peterson High Schools. The show opens with a reception on Saturday\, January 11 from 5-7 p.m.\, which is a fun opportunity to meet\, and ask questions of\, student artists and teachers from these schools. The show runs through January 25\, 2020. Always free and open to the public\, gallery hours are Tuesday – Saturday 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. in January. The show features a variety of art projects\, including those in ceramics\, acrylics\, pastels\, ink\, pencil\, and mixed media sculpture. \n“I love this show because it presents an opportunity for students’ visual arts to shine.  As a teacher\, I appreciate the ability of Lanesboro Arts to provide a place to showcase these young creators work\,” shares Lanesboro art teacher Stena Lieb. “I enjoy seeing work by students from other schools as well.  When my students come to the show\, they can see a wide variety of what their peers are doing in other schools.  They may get more ideas and become interested in different processes that we have not covered in our classes.  It is a great way to start a conversation on a topic we have yet to explore.” \nAccording to Gallery Director Robbie Brokken\, “The Art Show gives the students an opportunity to reveal a part of themselves to the public and each other through their art. Attendance and support of area families has been overwhelming and helps share our commitment to the community.” \n“I always try to push this as a big stepping stone and great experience\,” says Fillmore Central art teacher Carrie Mathison. “We always look at it (art show) as a very big honor for them.” Mathison\, who’s in her ninth year at Fillmore Central\, says there’s a special connection and appreciation shared by the talented teens. “They like to see the variety of work from other schools as well\,” she added. “There’s just kind of an awe and admiration at the same point.” \n“To me\, the show is really about supporting the arts in the schools and collaborating with the other teachers\,” shares Chatfield art instructor Abbey Potter. “The opening reception gives me the opportunity to catch up with the other teachers from the surrounding schools and ask about how they came up with ‘this’ or ‘that’ for their projects. I leave with a lot of great ideas for future projects or techniques to try with my students. The reception also gives me a chance to meet students’ parents\, talk with them and their child about all of the artwork on display\, and most rewarding\, see the excited look on the student’s face when they view their piece framed\, correctly lit and hanging on a gallery wall.”

SUMMARY:2020 Emerging Artist Application Deadline
DESCRIPTION:The Biennial Emerging Artist Exhibition highlights the work of one or more emerging artists each year. The application deadline for the 2020 exhibition is December 2\, 2019. Selection by jury will be made by January 2\, 2020; artists chosen for the show will be notified on or before that date. Lanesboro Arts defines “emerging artist” as an individual who has great potential in their artistic practice but has not yet received major recognition for their work. All visual arts media are eligible. Artists may be any age\, but Lanesboro Arts specifically invites those artists with little to no exhibition experience and encourages students and young artists to apply. All visual arts media are eligible. \nThe exhibit will feature pieces in 2D and 3D visual media in a variety of sizes\, with a size limit for each piece of 40” wide x 40” high. Pieces chosen for the Emerging Artist Show will need to be framed and include a hanging wire in the back; all work in the Emerging Artist Exhibition will be for sale as per consignment agreement (40% gallery\, 60% artist). Lanesboro Arts is seeking 2-3 emerging artists with bodies of work that can collectively fill the Lanesboro Arts exhibition gallery space. \nSelection of 2-3 artists by jury will be made by January 2 and those artists chosen for the show will be notified on or before that date. The chosen artists will install their own display to enhance their learning experience. The installation will take place on January 28 – the Lanesboro Arts Gallery will be open between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. The Emerging Artist Exhibition will open on Saturday\, February 1 with an artist reception from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.\, and run through March 29\, 2020. Visit our Emerging Artist Application page here for more information and application. Contact Robbie Brokken with questions or for more information\, 507-467-2446 / gallery@lanesboroarts.org.

SUMMARY:"Confluence" Artist Reception with Dirk Nelson & Ian Hanesworth
DESCRIPTION:Lanesboro Arts presents “Confluence\,” an exhibition of printmaking work by Dirk Nelson and Ian Hanesworth. The exhibit opens with an artist reception on Saturday\, October 19th from 6-8 p.m. and runs through December 15th\, 2019. The reception will include wine\, hors d’oeuvres and live music by Nathan Davidson and Kerry Klungtvedt. Always free and open to the public\, Lanesboro Arts Gallery is open seven days a week through October and is closed on Mondays November through December. \nIn “Confluence\,” artists Dirk Nelson and Ian Hanesworth bring together their divergent streams of work into an exhibit that acknowledges the ways these two artists have influenced each other. As Hanesworth says\, the title of the exhibit “speaks to the co-evolutionary nature of our practices\, our relationship as student and mentor\, and of the riparian landscape that we both call home.” The mentor and student relationship between the pair of artists began with Nelson teaching Hanesworth printmaking techniques in Winona\, MN. Both have then gone on to experiment with their own artistic practice\, but the influence that each have on the other continues. \nNelson shares\, “My goal for this show is to challenge myself to develop new work that explores new images and processes that are reactions to\, and influenced by\, the concepts and processes that I see Ian working through. I’ve never printed on cloth before and Ian has been working with natural dyes.” Nelson adds that “Finding ways to present and display works on cloth has become one of these challenges\, as I’ve used fabrics that Ian altered to make some monoprints.” Nelson received a Bachelor’s in Art from Winona State University and also currently resides in Winona. \nHanesworth states\, “I chose to exhibit print work in Lanesboro\, because this is the medium that Dirk has been teaching me over the past six years. The prominence of textiles in my practice stems from being raised on a small fiber farm in Winona\, Minn.\, as well as the influence of my mom’s artistic practice on my own.” Hanesworth elaborates\,” I am drawn to relief printmaking and textiles because of the materiality of both mediums and because I feel grounded in the slow\, repetitive labor of carving\, dyeing\, and printing.” Hanesworth is an emerging artist from Winona pursuing a BFA in Painting and Drawing at the Minneapolis College of Art & Design\, but currently resides in Brooklyn\, NY for a studio residency program. \nThis exhibit is sponsored by KTTC Television and made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a Minnesota State Arts Board Operating Support grant\, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund. \n\nSponsored by:

SUMMARY:Artist Demonstration: Tom Nelson
DESCRIPTION:Lanesboro Arts invites all art enthusiasts to attend a live demonstration by Juried Sales Gallery Artist Tom Nelson. Tom will create beautiful stained glass pieces right in the gallery\, allowing participants to see his work take shape in real time. The event takes place on Saturday\, September 21 from 1:00 to 4:00 PM\, and is free and open to public. \nBased in Dassel\, MN\, Tom Nelson started creating glass projects in 1975. He finds intrigue and wonder in the vast array of glass colors and textures and how all these factors play a major role in the design and creation of a project. \nTom’s early inspiration was from the work of Louis Comfort Tiffany.  He has created many Tiffany style replica lamps and considers himself a student of the Tiffany design attributes; studying many of his best window designs in great detail. Tom believes that characteristics like plating multiple layers of glass and abstract coloring add a great amount dimension to a window. Studying the contrast of light and dark shading\, Tom finds design ideas in the most unusual places and enjoys turning those inspirations into stained glass windows.  Tom is inspired by the way light can strike an object or nature scene in just the right way and strives to capture that look in his glass.

SUMMARY:Artist Demonstration: Ian Baldry
DESCRIPTION:Lanesboro Arts presents a live artist demonstration by Juried Sales Gallery textile artist Ian Baldry. Come and learn more about the fiber arts\, and see firsthand how these beautiful pieces are created\, on Saturday\, September 14 from 1:00 to 5:00 PM. The event is free and open to the public. \nIan is a textile artist from Minnesota who creates fine knit sweaters and accessories from merino wool\, cotton\, and bamboo yarns. Always passionate about exploring new fiber arts\, Ian acquired her first knitting machine ten years ago and loved it so much she started creating her own knitwear designs. \nAs a young farm girl in western Minnesota\, Ian developed an interest in machinery while helping with the annual wheat harvest. She eventually chose a career as a mechanical engineer\, but her love for the fiber arts continued to grow. Several years ago\, Ian found a way to combine the two passions after procuring her first knitting loom. Influenced by Scandinavian textiles and her life growing up in rural Minnesota\, she creates sweaters\, vests\, and accessories from extra-fine yarns on her knitting loom at her home studio in Minneapolis\, MN.
