SUMMARY:Gallery Holiday Shopping Event
DESCRIPTION:Shop local this holiday season\, with two special Saturday shopping events at the Lanesboro Arts Gallery! On Saturday December 2nd and 9th\, we welcome you to find unique\, handmade gifts for everyone on your list. \nOur team will offer complimentary gift wrapping. While you shop\, chat with local artists about their work\, and enjoy artist demonstrations from fiber artist Karen Schmidt (December 2nd) and oil painter Joan Finnegan (December 9th). We’ll serve cocoa and cookies to satisfy your sweet tooth and we’ll have winter wonderland coloring pages designed by local artist\, Diane Knight! \nWith more than eighty regional and local artists\, creating unique artwork in many mediums\, we’re sure you’ll find meaningful gifts  — from stocking-suffers to showstoppers. \nKaren Schmidt creates unique felted sculptures from wool she raises on her farm near Preston\, MN. She keeps a flock of Icelandic sheep\, llamas\, and alpacas. She processes all of the wool by herself\, striving to make the wool look as natural and beautiful as it did on the animal! This is a labor of love and she enjoys every step in the process. Her art is intended to honor the animals. \nJoan Finnegan creates art that celebrates the colors and harmony of nature\, capturing the wonder of a fleeting moment and the quality of light as it defines the subject\, whether it be a landscape\, still life or portrait. Her core work is inspired by the best of impressionism and realism. She also paints in an additional expressive style\, which she calls the “Fabric of the Lanesboro Landscape.” She invites the viewer to step into her art and surrender themselves to the emotion of that moment. \nDiane Knight finds herself doodling in meetings\, on the phone\, and especially when she is seeking calm. One day\, she was inspired to try doodling over a bit of color and had so much fun she hasn’t been able to stop since! Since retiring from the Mayo Clinic’s art department and creating masks and puppets with Rochester’s Masque Theatre\, she has experimented with different mediums and learned how to use power tools. In addition to being a prolific visual artist\, Diane is also a poet. \nThe Lanesboro Arts Gallery features work by more than 80 artists from Minnesota\, Iowa\, and Wisconsin. As a multidisciplinary arts organization with a passion for engaging its community with art\, the Lanesboro Arts sales and exhibition galleries strive to present accessible and diverse works that foster educational opportunities for visitors as well as impacting artists’ careers.

SUMMARY:"People\, Places and Things" Paintings by Christine Tierney and Michele Combs
DESCRIPTION:Visit the Lanesboro Arts Exhibition Gallery to take in a joint exhibition of gorgeous oil paintings. “People\, Places and Things” brings the work of Christine Tierney and Michele Combs together in the final exhibition of 2023. This exhibit is open from October 21st to December 23rd. \nChristine Tierney and Michele Combs share a passion for painting beautiful expressions of the world around them. While they were both classically trained in the tradition of the Old Masters\, they have each forged their own individual paths in the art world. Some of their paintings are done outdoors in the elements\, where mother nature calls the shots\, and some are painted in the comfort of their studios\, with controlled temperature and lighting. Like handwriting\, the artistic expression created when wielding a paintbrush will always carry the personal touch of the one that created it. Their works exhibited together complement each other and provide the viewer with two unique interpretations of People\, Places and Things. \nMichele Combs lives in Minneapolis. She attended the University of MN for a B.S. in Occupational Therapy. Art is something that she was always drawn to\, now considering herself a professional painter. Her training included traditional realism instruction at the Minnesota River School of Fine Art and workshops with talented painting instructors. \nAfter a long career in advertising\, Christine Tierney returned to her heart’s desire and studied classical painting in the methods of the old masters. She can often be found painting in her studio in St. Paul\, and  also ventures outside to paint plein air. The majority of her paintings are created in oil or pastel. \nAn artist reception opens the show on Saturday\, October 21 from 6:00 to 8:00\, featuring refreshments and live jazz by Dave O’Mara and friends. \n This exhibition is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a Minnesota State Arts Board grant\, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund. \nOil painting by Christine Tierney. \nOil painting by Michele Combs.

SUMMARY:"Yesterday. Today. Tomorrow." 30th Gallery Anniversary Reception
DESCRIPTION:Lanesboro Arts is proud to present the 30th Gallery Anniversary Reception\, happening on Saturday\, July 15th from 5:00 – 7:00 pm at the Lanesboro Arts Gallery. This event\, celebrating the 30th Anniversary Group Exhibition “Yesterday. Today. Tomorrow.” will feature special guests\, historical storytelling\, heavy hors d’oeuvres\, and live music! \nThis year marks 30 years for the Lanesboro art gallery — now a part of Lanesboro Arts. Over the last three decades\, hundreds of artists have shown their work in solo and group shows in the Exhibition Gallery or sold their work in the Sales Gallery.  \nTo honor and celebrate that legacy – and all of the artists\, community members\, and patrons who’ve contributed to it – we’ve assembled a juried group show featuring the work of more than 30 artists. This special Gallery Anniversary Reception will include storytelling from artists\, staff\, and community members who have been a part of the Gallery’s rich history; a special poetry reading from Whalan poet and artist Diane Knight; and live music as well.  \nThe group show will run from June 17 – August 13. Other related events include a special anniversary after hours celebration from 7:00 – 9:00 pm on Saturday\, July 15th on the back patio of High Court Pub. and the Canvas Clash\, a fast-paced\, live painting showdown between six artists that will take place on Thursday\, July 13th from 6:30 – 8:30 pm at Sylvan Brewing. Find more information about these events Here.\n \nThe exhibit is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a Minnesota State Arts Board Operating Support grant\, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.

SUMMARY:End Table Ecosystem Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Lanesboro Arts proudly presents “End Table Ecosystem\,” an exhibition of paintings by Anna Segner. This collection of paintings depict domestic scenes featuring animal imagery. They portray the popularity of animal depictions in toys and home decor – despite the reality that consumerism plays a role in displacing animal populations habits. Through her whimsical compositions\, Segner invites people to question how their adoration for nature is expressed and passed on to children. \nThe show opens on April 15th with a gallery reception from 6 – 8 pm. Always free and open to the public\, gallery hours are Tuesday – Saturday\, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. “End Table Ecosystem” will be on view until June 11th. \nAnna Segner is a studio artist focused on painting\, mixed media\, and assemblage. In her practice\, Anna incorporates critical animal studies and other research to question the human act of “toying” with animals and nature. Anna earned her MFA from Iowa State University in the Spring of 2019 and a Bachelor of Arts in Literature with Writing Emphasis and Studio Art from Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota in 2015. SUMMARY:2023 Emerging Artist Show
DESCRIPTION:Lanesboro Arts is thrilled to present the 2023 Emerging Artist Exhibition. The show provides an opportunity for early-career artists to display work in a professional gallery setting. Visitors will experience fresh\, energetic pieces from inspiring creators in several mediums. This year’s show features the vibrant work of seven emerging visual artists from Minnesota and Wisconsin: Gabriel Berg\, Samantha Bratland\, Lindsey Cherek-Waller\, Lindsey Jorgensen\, David Susag\, Jesus Genis Tlaseca\, and Carol Weissenborn. \nThe 2023 Emerging Artist Exhibition will run from February 11th to April 9th. \nJoin us in celebrating the exhibition at the Opening Reception on Saturday\, February 11th from 6-8 pm. Mingle with the artists and art appreciators\, take in the artwork\, and enjoy music and refreshments! \nLanesboro Arts is dedicated to supporting the growth of early-career artists as an important function of its mission to serve as a community arts catalyst. Lanesboro Arts Defines an “Emerging Artist” as an individual who has great potential in their artistic practice\, but has not yet received major recognition\, has not yet been substantially celebrated for their work\, and/or has not yet established significant ‘footing’ within their field. All visual arts media were eligible for consideration\, and we received dozens of high-caliber applications. \nGabriel Berg is a 3D fiber and mixed-media artist based in Viroqua\, Wisconsin. As a disabled LGBTQ adult\, Gabriel’s art has been a stabilizing force that has given voice to an inner dialog and focus to face new challenges. His intricate mandala patterns incorporate layers of delicate and vibrant string atop wood panels. To him\, mandalas are a symbol of our dream life and represent a search for completeness and unity. Gabriel seeks that unity through his work\, striving to break down stereotypes and attitudes that marginalize individuals and communities\, while engaging in a meditative art practice. Viewers will see an expression of calm\, spiritual strength in the unified pattern that emerges from the carefully winding strings of his Mandalas. \nSamantha Bratland believes that humanity’s essential responsibility is to bear witness to the beauty of the world around us. For Samantha\, this belief manifests as an interest in color\, its perception\, and its peculiarities. and a commitment to pursuing an art career. Bratland’s work highlights and elevates the beauty of the natural world in an expressive range of saturated colors. Her goal is to capture the natural beauty that she feels would otherwise be taken for granted. She is based in Preston\, Minnesota\, where\, in addition to making art\, she also teaches High School art at Fillmore Central. Her position inspires her to continue creating and sharing her artwork. \nLindsey Cherek-Waller’s work showcases queer joy through portraits and still-life paintings\, envisioning a future beyond the binary. Her large scale figurative paintings tell a story of seeing\, being seen\, and the connections that are made when we take the time to truly be with one another. Lindsey’s portraits invite questions about the painting process\, the subject\, and one’s own self. Their still lifes honor the genre’s historical interest in the preciousness of life\, while archiving what is important to them and their community as a queer\, non-binary artist. Her work shows us how we can take up space\, embrace play and love even amidst obstacles\, and utilize the time we have now to work towards a better future for all. They are based in Red Wing\, Minnesota. \nLindsey Jorgensen has a long-term love of working with fibers and fabrics. She started exploring weaving last year as a way to surround herself with soft fluffy colors during the long winters in Bloomington\, Minnesota. Along the way\, she fell in love with the freedom of working without a plan. Lindsey chooses her colors and textures instinctively from natural plant and animal fibers\, as well as from a box of wool and cotton yards inherited from her grandmother. While fibers are so often manipulated into a rigid form of perfection\, Lindsey says the lucky ones get to celebrate their own dynamic personalities. Each of her pieces is woven from the bottom up\, with only a small portion visible at any one time\, making the final result a pleasant surprise! \nDavid Susag is a Lanesboro\, Minnesota–based artist who has been studying Norwegian folk art for over 20 years. He creates wooden bowls using a Norwegian pole Lathe. This technique is over a thousand years old; related artifacts have been found in the remains of early Viking settlements! David is a dedicated student of the art form\, having taken his first spring pole lathe class in 2014 and built his first lathe in 2015. David demonstrates his bowl turning for the Vesterheim Norwegian-American Museum and Folk Art School’s annual Nordic Fest. Recently\, he has been making Norwegian ale bowls\, along with lidded boxes\, wooden flasks\, and handled cups. His bowls are both beautifully decorated and food-safe\, and a few carry a story or two in their shapes. \nJesus Genis Tlaseca\, aka RiPTOE began making art at nine years old. What started with doodles of cartoon and video game characters has since developed into a serious passion. Based in Minneapolis\, RiPTOE is a graphic design student by day and a self-described chaotic messy artist by night. RiPTOE seeks to create art that represents his roots in Mesoamerican culture. He also has worked on projects ranging from brand designs\, cover art\, and video production for local Minnesotan musicians. Whether working in digital or mixed media art\, his punchy colors\, dynamic compositions\, and engagement with contemporary popular culture attract and reward attention. \nCarol Weissenborn has returned to creative expression after three and a half decades working as a lawyer. In the courtroom\, her creative sensibilities were expressed by using contrast and juxtaposition to disrupt cliched thinking\,\, and leaning into the dichotomy of intention and improvisation. On the canvas\, Carol is drawn to what she calls the ‘enigma of abstraction’\, where meaning is made in the spaces surrounding our actions. Having only begun painting in her 60s\, the Minneapolis based artist finds that her work is preoccupied with time’s paradoxes. Her combination of acrylic painting and collage on wood panels builds layers of material\, where earlier additions lurk beneath the surface like something half-remembered. Carol brings her work to a place where hope and decay converge. \nThe exhibit is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a Minnesota State Arts Board Operating Support grant\, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund. For more information visit www.lanesboroarts.org\, call 507-467-2446 or email gallery@lanesboroarts.org. SUMMARY:Catherine Hearding Watercolor Demo
DESCRIPTION:The Lanesboro Arts Juried Sales Gallery hosts artist Catherine Hearding for a demonstration of her watercolor painting from 1:00 – 4:00 PM on Saturday\, November 26th. Come watch an artist at work\, and find her work for sale on the Gallery walls.  Always free and open to the public\, gallery hours are Tuesday – Saturday\, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. \nAs a landscape painter\, the emphasis of Catherine Hearding’s watercolors is on the elements of color\, shape\, value and light\, inviting the viewer to see the subject from a unique perspective. To accomplish this goal\, she focuses on intimate views of the landscape. Many of her landscapes have a high horizon line\, bringing more attention to the foreground and details that might otherwise be passed over. She also paints still lifes and floral scenes\, both of which maintain her characteristic vibrancy and attention to detail. \nShe uses a three-step process for her paintings: save the whites and pour light values to tone the paper\, add mid-tone large shapes\, finish with dark values and smaller shapes for contrast and detail. Most of her paintings start with a poured under-painting of two or three colors over the entire sheet\, letting these colors mix freely on the paper and creating wonderful color transitions across the page. Whites are saved before pouring\, by using masking fluid or leaving areas dry. The poured wash represents the lightest values in the painting and insures that these colors will be there to add a glow to the finished piece. Each composition is painted as a whole\, rather than focusing on sections of the painting separately. Colors used are chosen specifically for each painting and typically\, only 3-4 colors are used in each painting\, creating beautiful harmony and bright\, clean color. See this process at work in our gallery on November 26th! \nThis demonstration is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a Minnesota State Arts Board Operating Support grant\, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund. SUMMARY:Exhibition Opening for "Fables from Yesterday"
DESCRIPTION:Lanesboro Arts presents “Fables from Yesterday\,” an exhibition showcasing ceramic sculptures by Susan Strand-Penman. The show opens on October 22nd with an artist reception from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. There will be hors d’oeuvres and beverages that visitors can enjoy inside and outside of the Gallery\, as well as live music. Always free and open to the public\, the Lanesboro Arts Exhibition Gallery is open Tuesday – Saturday\, 10-5pm. \nInspired by the work of Rachel Carson and other conservationists\, Susan Strand-Penman’s ceramic sculptures demonstrate the fragile balance between humans and the natural world. The exhibit will include site specific installations that focus on nature and realism while telling the story of loss and need for urgent action. The installation pieces have a quiet ghostly presence that creates an environment for calm reflection. There will also be individual figural pieces that highlight our connectedness to nature and tell contemporary stories through the use of symbolism and fables. \nHer sculptures are hand built using slabs and multiple layers of added or removed clay. Working in such a malleable medium allows Strand-Penman to explore textures using many different techniques. Each piece is individual and creates a unique story that grows intuitively from the clay. \nExhibit sponsor: Eagle Bluff Environmental Learning Center Lanesboro\, MN \n \n  \nThis exhibit is sponsored by Eagle Bluff Environmental Learning Center and made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a Minnesota State Arts Board Operating Support grant\, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund. SUMMARY:"Goddess 2.0" Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Lanesboro Arts presents “Goddess 2.0”\, an exhibition showcasing digital photographer Cindy Vondran. The show opens on Saturday\, August 13th with an artist reception from 4:00 – 6:00 p.m. This event will feature live music and free beverages to accompany the first showing of this gorgeous exhibition. The show runs through October 16th. Always free and open to the public\, gallery hours are Tuesday – Saturday\, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. \nThe female figure is the subject of Vondran’s conceptual images\, which are photos extracted and further layered and edited in digital settings. Photography is something Vondran has done for over 40 years; she loves how digital photography give unlimited options to create artistic images that were not available with film photography. \nVondran describes her work as such: “I am generally attracted to things that are highly sensual and evocative. I enjoy experimenting and pushing the limits\, always evolving\, but never arriving. I desire that my art be perceived as poetic in nature\, speaking directly to the viewer\, as they often generate their own unique interpretations.” \nExhibition dates: August 13 – October 16 \nThis exhibit is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a Minnesota State Arts Board Operating Support grant\, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.

SUMMARY:Exhibition Opening for “Take Me to the River”
DESCRIPTION:Lanesboro Arts presents “Take Me to the River”\, an exhibition showcasing over thirty artists interpretations of “Water” in this year’s annual group art show. The show opens on Saturday\, June 4th with an artist reception from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m.; the show runs through August 7th. There will be hors d’oeuvres and beverages that visitors can enjoy inside and outside of the Gallery\, as well as live music. Come on out for a celebratory evening of art and community! \nAbout the exhibition: \nAs an essential ingredient in many artistic mediums and techniques\, water propels both the work of a potter’s wheel and the brush on a gouache landscape. As subject matter\, water is also ubiquitous. The sea is represented as both tranquil and formidable in plein air seascapes. And water fuels many brutalist fountains and kinetic sculptures. The Lanesboro Arts Summer group show challenged entrants to represent/present water – still or dynamic – in a fresh way — either as a medium or as subject matter. \nThere were nearly 200 pieces entered for consideration. A few dozen pieces made the final cut. “It was heartening to see so many exceptional entries\,” said Gallery and Communications Director\, Kris Viesselman. “The show will be a dynamic mix of both 2-D and 3-D pieces from traditional to more contemporary. There’s something for everyone.” \nExhibit sponsor: Merchant’s Bank in Lanesboro\, MN \n \nTake Me to the River is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a Minnesota State Arts Board grant\, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.

SUMMARY:Exhibition Opening for “A Few Steps Ahead”
DESCRIPTION:Lanesboro Arts presents “A Few Steps Ahead”\, an exhibition showcasing print-maker and painter Amy Rice. The show opens on Saturday\, March 26th with an artist reception from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m.; the show runs through May 29th. There will be hors d’oeuvres and non-alcoholic beverages that visitors can enjoy outside in front of the Gallery\, as well as live music. Come on out for a celebratory evening of art and community! \nAbout the Exhibition: \nIn 2010\, Amy Rice’s art was featured on the Minnesota Public Television series Minnesota Original. In the interview she stated that she was making a creative shift from painting her present and past to painting what Rice wanted her future to look like\, which at the time included having a cabin on a lake with a swan paddle boat and big gardens. It’s been 10 years since that feature and Rice has the cabin. It’s tiny and on a creek and not a lake\, and she’s still looking for that elusive swan paddle boat\, but she does in fact have the big gardens. \nRice describes this approach as such: “Much of my current work is my to-do list and my stretch goals. I am a wanna-be-flower-farmer. I’m not satisfied anymore with a big garden; I want acres of stripes of living colors. I want my fields to be my canvas and flowers to be my paint. Slowly\, year by hard working year it’s happening. My paintings are just a few steps ahead of my reality.” \nRice’s work is deeply layered\, often both literally and figuratively. Her imagery–nostalgic and wistful–is largely biographical and reflective of her pensive nature. The artist uses nontraditional print-making methods — including hand cut stencils and a 1980s Japanese screen printing toy called a Gocco printer — as a starting point for original mixed media pieces. Rice uses enamel spray paint\, acrylics\, gouache\, and inks\, and print on a variety of surfaces including wood\, fabric and antique papers (preferring handwritten love letters\, envelopes\, journal pages\, sheet music and maps). \nThis exhibit is sponsored by Inspire(d) Media and is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a Minnesota State Arts Board Operating Support grant\, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund. For more information visit www.lanesboroarts.org\, call 507-467-2446 or email gallery@lanesboroarts.org. Handicapped accessible and free to the public\, the exhibition gallery is located at 103 Parkway Avenue North in Lanesboro\, MN.  \nAlways free and open to the public\, gallery hours are Tuesday – Saturday\, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.

SUMMARY:Exhibition Opening for "Dappled: Growing Up With Shadow and Light"
DESCRIPTION:Lanesboro Arts presents “Dappled: Growing Up With Shadow and Light”\, an exhibition showcasing ceramics by Kordula Coleman. The show opens on Saturday\, October 23rd with an artist reception  from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m.; the show runs through December 10th.  There will be hors d’oeuvres and non-alcoholic beverages that visitors can enjoy outside in front of the Gallery\, as well as live music. Come on out for a celebratory evening of art and community! \nAbout the Exhibition: \nThis body of work visualizes Coleman’s experience of being raised by parents with severe trauma caused by living in Germany during WWII and it’s aftermath. The collection is a monument to Coleman’s childhood and origin family and also to trauma survivors’ courage. The ceramics are a physical reminder of how wars affect generations of families\, long after the war itself is over. \nKordula Coleman is a figurative ceramic sculptor who lives and works in Northeast Minneapolis. After immigrating to the US in 2000 from Cologne\, Germany\, Coleman rekindled her love for sculpting with clay. Coleman started sculpting at an early age and is a ceramic journeyman. More information can be found on Coleman’s website: http://www.kordulacolemansculptures.com/ \nFind out more about the exhibition here.  \nThis exhibit is sponsored by KTTC and is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a Minnesota State Arts Board Operating Support grant\, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund. Always free and open to the public\, gallery hours are Tuesday – Saturday\, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. and Sunday 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. \nThis body of work visualizes Coleman’s experience of being raised by parents with severe trauma caused by living in Germany during WWII and it’s aftermath. The collection is a monument to Coleman’s childhood and origin family and also to trauma survivors’ courage. The ceramics are a physical reminder of how wars affect generations of families\, long after the war itself is over. \nAs Coleman says\, “It is both disturbing and healing for me to go to that place\, but I feel that it is important for me to figure out how their trauma has shaped me\, and honor the love\, warmth and positivity [my parents] were still able to give to their children. I also hope that turning these memories into sculptures and thus sharing them with the world will help others open up about similar experiences\, and start valuable and instructive conversations.” \nColeman’s sculptural work focuses on human nature and the human body. This focus results in gestural\, emotional creations that tell the viewer stories through the sculpture’s poses\, facial features\, gestures\, or clothing characteristics. Much time and care is spent on facial features especially\, creating emotional depth to Coleman’s work. More information can be found on Coleman’s website: http://www.kordulacolemansculptures.com/ \nThis exhibit is sponsored by KTTC and is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a Minnesota State Arts Board Operating Support grant\, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund. SUMMARY:"My Wild and Precious Life" Artist Reception and Mural Launch
DESCRIPTION:Lanesboro Arts presents “My Wild and Precious Life”\, an exhibition showcasing paintings by Kat Corrigan. The show opens on August 27th with an artist reception on Saturday\, August 28th from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m.; the show runs through October 17th.  Inspired by the beauty of everyday objects and literary works\, Corrigan found the exhibition title in Mary Oliver’s poem “The Summer Day”; the exhibition itself will feature paintings of animals\, landscapes and water scenes. \nLanesboro Arts is also celebrating the completion of the Parkway Place Mural Project\, as well as launching the Little Free Art Library created by the Lanesboro Girl Scout Troop. Stop by the Gallery to tour the exhibition and then walk across the street to view the Parkway Place Mural and Little Free Art Library! There will be hors d’oeuvres and non-alcoholic beverages that visitors can enjoy in Parkway Place (across the street from the Gallery). There will be live music from Anne and Andy Lowe from 6 – 8 p.m. in Parkway Place. Come on out for a celebratory evening of art and community! \nAbout the Exhibition: \nThrough Corrigan’s paintings\, viewers are invited to enter a universe that is sharp and alive with color\, vibrates with movement\, lights the imagination\, and offers sanctuary from daily human complication. Corrigan has been painting for over twenty years and nearly daily since 2010. Her work carries impressionistic qualities through the way brush strokes and layers of paint embody her subject. \n“Painting is an act of meditation and joy for me.  It is the negative space around familiar forms that intrigues me- how to properly depict that curve of kinked tail\, the twist in an ear\, the slant of sunlight on fallen snow.  I thrill to take a common subject such as a dog and elevate it to an abstraction of color and light. My work is translating the focus of a soul into brushstrokes\, attempting to depict in pigment what is written in an eye\,” explains Corrigan. \nAward-winning Minneapolis-based artist Kat Corrigan’s formal art training began at a young age through the direction of her mother\, an art teacher and exhibiting artist. Corrigan graduated from the College of St. Benedict with a BA in Art\, including a semester of independent study in Ireland painting watercolors. She is active in the Women’s Art Resources of Minnesota (WARM) and participates annually in the Women’s Art  Institute in Grand Marais\, MN at the Art Colony. She exhibits her paintings throughout  the metro area and actively seeks gallery representation and private commissions. Her work has won awards and recognition in juried shows throughout the United States and  has been widely collected both in the US and in England\, Australia\, Japan\, Wales\, and Lebanon. Corrigan teaches painting lessons from her South Minneapolis studio. \nThis exhibit is sponsored by Inspire(d) Magazine and is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a Minnesota State Arts Board Operating Support grant\, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund. Always free and open to the public\, gallery hours are Tuesday – Saturday from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. For more information visit www.lanesboroarts.org\, call 507-467-2446 or email gallery@lanesboroarts.org. Handicapped accessible and free to the public\, the exhibition gallery is located at 103 Parkway Avenue North in Lanesboro\, MN. \nAbout the Parkway Place Mural: \nLanesboro Arts and the City of Lanesboro proudly announce the completion of the Parkway Place Mural Project in downtown Lanesboro. Parkway Place\, located in the gravel lot on Parkway Ave in downtown Lanesboro\, is a central hub of activity for locals and visitors alike. Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic\, Parkway Place increasingly became a destination for outdoor seating for patrons of area restaurants\, businesses and the bike trail. Lanesboro Arts partnered with Lanesboro Area Chamber of Commerce\, Lanesboro Economic Development Authority\, and private property owner Andy Bunge to carry out the Parkway Place Mural project with the goal to activate a previously vacant space into a vibrant gathering space in the center of downtown. The Parkway Place Project included other updates to the space\, including freshly painted picnic tables thanks to the Lanesboro Boy Scouts\, flower planters\, shade tents\, and ambient evening lighting. \nThe mural features brightly colored flowers\, leaves\, the sun\, and the Root River all framing big block letters that spell out “Lanesboro.” It is 6 feet tall by 32 feet wide and was installed on weatherproof plywood attached to the fence in Parkway Place. The design was created by Lanesboro Arts Administrative Intern\, Kiara Hohn. Kiara is a recent graduate with a visual art degree from Luther College specializing in painting. \nThe Parkway Place Project is partially funded by the Lanesboro Community Foundation with additional support from Lanesboro Arts.

SUMMARY:"Heartbeats" Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Lanesboro Arts presents “Heartbeats” an exhibition featuring the work of Viroqua\, WI based artist Kathie Wheeler. The show opens on June 19th – August 15th. Always free and open to the public\, gallery hours are Wednesday – Sunday\, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. \nWhile Kathie is known for her landscape plein air work\, this unique exhibition focuses exclusively on figurative paintings. This expressive series celebrate people from different backgrounds. Kathie hopes the paintings prompt heartfelt reactions from viewers as they uncover universal themes of humanity. As Kathie explains\, “I try to put the feeling or emotion I see in a place or person on the canvas.  My hope is that the viewer can take some of that away with them.” \nKathie describes her process as such: “I count myself fortunate to be an artist. My paintings reflect the scenes and people in my daily life and many are begun or painted entirely on location or from life. Painting “en plein air” is filled with both challenges and great pleasure. No day is ever the same\,” explains Wheeler. “And so\, I join the long history of adventurers who translate the beauty of their surroundings onto canvas with brushes and paint. It gives me great pleasure to share these moments in time with those who live with my paintings in their lives.” \nKathie was born in 1962 and was raised in the Chicago area. As a young woman\, she studied at the American Academy of Art\, where she won the prestigious Union Art League Scholarship Competition\, then worked as a freelance commercial artist and portrait artist. \nKathie creates remarkable landscapes and portraits and works primarily with a rich oil  palette\, but also enjoys dabbling in pastel\, watercolor.  She paints plein air throughout the year\, as well as working in the studio. Kathie and her husband reside on a small farm in southwest Wisconsin. \nSponsored by Commonweal Theatre: \n \nThis exhibit is sponsored by Commonweal Theatre and made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a Minnesota State Arts Board Operating Support grant\, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.
