SUMMARY:Kordula Coleman Earthenware Pottery Demonstration
DESCRIPTION:Join Kordula Coleman from 11am – 1 pm on Saturday\, October 17 th as she showcases her unique earthenware pottery process. Kordula starts by hand shaping and carving her clay peices before cutting them up and hollowing them out. She then fuses the pieces back together and lets them dry before firing. \nFor this demonstration Kordula will be showing how she makes her very popular little birds\, as shown in the webpage image. \nKordula Coleman (she/her) is a ceramic artist whose work explores the numerous possibilities of showing inner processes by a certain pose or gesture of the body. Her pieces are detailed and close to nature. These details\, especially of the face\, enable her to feel connected with the piece. She has to work on the facial expression of the piece until they “click”. \nKordula focuses on emotions and subjects that inspire her and make her appreciate life with all its turns\, even if some pieces hint at darker states of mind. A sculpture idea often comes to her while listening to music\, watching movies\, or even just from hearing an evocative phrase or statement. \nThis pop-up is free and open to the public and will be located in the Lanesboro Arts Gallery. \nKordula’s demonstration coincides with the last Lanesboro Area Art Trail weekend of 2026! Local artists welcome visitors to shop and see their studio spaces from 10 am – 5 pm Friday\, October 16th and Saturday\, October 17th.

SUMMARY:"Lush Layers" Gallery Opening and Artist Reception
DESCRIPTION:Lanesboro Arts presents “Lush Layers\,” an exhibition of paintings by Des Moines-based artist Jess Quinn. \nThe gallery opening and artist reception is on August 8th from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. Attendees can enjoy conversations with the artist\, refreshments\, and live music while getting a first look at the new exhibition. \nLush Layers explores the richness and depth found within botanical forms\, where petals fold\, overlap\, and build into something both soft and structured. Working at a more intimate scale\, these paintings invite a closer viewing experience\, drawing attention to the subtle shifts in color\, edge\, and movement within each bloom. Each piece is developed through multiple layers of oil paint\, allowing color to deepen and forms to emerge gradually over time. This layered process mirrors the natural structure of the flowers themselves\, where one petal rests against another\, creating a sense of fullness\, complexity\, and quiet movement. Set against darker grounds\, the color becomes more luminous\, heightening contrast and bringing forward the intricate details within each form. The paintings hold a balance between control and looseness\, where edges soften\, transitions blend\, and the surface continues to evolve as layers are added. Lush Layers reflects both what is seen and how it is made\, the physical layering of paint alongside the natural layering within the subject. Through this connection\, the work invites viewers to slow down\, look more closely\, and experience the depth held within something familiar. \nThis exhibition is made possible by the Commonweal Theater and the voters of Minnesota through a Minnesota State Arts Board Operating Support grant\, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.

SUMMARY:"Carrying Each Other" Group Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Lanesboro arts is excited to work in collaboration with Minnesotan Artists in various stages of their career to create this summer’s Gallery Exhibition\, “Carrying Each Other\,” a group exhibition celebrating creative labor and the many ways artists hold their communities together. \nArtists were asked to submit work exploring these visible and invisible forms of support\, exchange\, and mutual care that shape community life and why it matters to them. The work in this show ranges from quilted textiles and leatherwork\, to paintings and photo collages\, to interactive work and audio recordings\, and much more. \nThis exhibition features work from Shug Munic\, Beth Stahn\, Clara Wodny\, Marge Buckley\, Melissa Wray\, Andy Kranz\, Julia Meles\, Lizzie Christian\, Ollie Schminkey\, Annabel Higgin-Houser\, Isabella Dawis\, Mary Bruno\, Peter Haakon Thompson\, and Kordula Coleman. \nWhat does it mean to Carry Each Other? As we have seen in our state\, community care and support can be an active\, artful\, and defiant connector. Holding space\, sharing burdens\, bearing witness are all forms of deep care particularly held by artists and culture bearers as carriers of stories\, traditions\, imagination and memory. The loads carried by artists are shaped by experience: this show seeks to shine a light on the unequal loads and historic inequities placed upon marginalized communities as it celebrates community care. This show also holds space for carrying each other into a shared future. \n“Carrying Each Other” prioritizes artists who identify as LGBTQIA +\, Two-Spirit\, BIPOC\, disabled\, and/or rurally located artists (including those in southeast Minnesota). \nAbout the Artists \n\nAndy Kranz explores his experiences growing up on a farm through his surreal iconographic representations of the rural\, driftless landscapes.\nAnnabel Higgin-Houser creates dreamy scenes of a hopeful future or distant world where humans and all living things can thrive through quilting\, applique\, and crochet. https://annabelhigginhouser.carrd.co/\nBeth Stahn explores the tension bound up in nostalgia through character-driven\, boldly staged photographs shaped by domestic life. https://www.bethstahn.com/\nClara Wodny’s work develops out of a deep love for humanity and all the differences\, quirks\, and identities that make us who we are. Her featured piece was made in admiration for the people of Minnesota.\nIsabella Dawis is a Filipina-American storyteller\, performer\, and musician from Minneapolis\, whose work traverses the boundary between known and unknown.\nJulia Meles creates work that evokes a sense of presence and play as a way to understand the body\, physicality\, and disability. https://www.instagram.com/orangejoolia/\nKordula Coleman focuses on emotions and subjects that inspire her to appreciate life with all its turns\, creating evocative ceramic sculptures like those in her “Ice Watch” series. https://www.kordulacolemansculptures.com/\nLizzie Christian is the one-woman artist behind Rare Press\, a whimsical\, uplifting illustration and block printing business based in the Twin Cities. https://rarepressmpls.com/\nMariah Balajadia is an artist and graphic designer based in Decorah\, Iowa who created the show’s poster image as a reflection of who we are when we\ncare and support one another.\nMarge Buckley is a painter and playwright who uses dramatic colors and surreal compositions as tools of optimism\, asserting that oppressive systems can be transformed in radical ways.\nhttps://www.margebuckley.net/\nMary Bruno is a St. Joseph-based Printmaker who believes that handmade things carry energy\, that humor and tenderness can live side by side\, and that craft is a form of care. https://www.mcbrunopress.com/\nMelissa Wray ponders her connection to hope and curiosity as a rural resident through hand quilting and applique.\n Ollie Schminkey has spent the past decade coaching\, mentoring\, teaching classes and running workshops for poets. https://www.ollieschminkey.com/\nPeter Haakon Thompson’s primary mediums are participation\, interaction\, and conversation; his work reimagines spaces and symbols to create opportunities for community engagement. https://www.phtpht.com/\nShug Munic transforms textile waste to tell fragmented stories of devotion through the mundane and show how transformation can reveal a path towards regeneration. https://www.sophiamunic.com/\n\nThis exhibition is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a Minnesota State Arts Board Operating Support grant\, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.

SUMMARY:Share Your Soil Story with Artist-in-Residence Chloe Bischoff
DESCRIPTION:Lanesboro Artist-in-residence Chloe Bischoff will be hosting an open story sharing opportunity at the Lanesboro Arts Gallery from 10 am – 1 pm on Saturday\, April 25th during the Bluff Country Studio Tour! Drop by Chloe’s table to share stories about your relationship to the land beneath our feet.  \nChloe is collecting stories about your connection to the local land to inform her residency project. Their residency invites participants to consider soil not as an inert material\, but as an active presence shaped by geology\, ecology\, labor\, and memory. They ask: where do you see these themes in your own life? How do you connect to the soil in significant places in your life? \nChloe will also connect with folks around their residency project and workshops. The stories shared here will help inform Chloe’s final residency project\, a collection of personalized tokens that relate to Lanesboro residents’ relationships to the local land. While you make your way through the Bluff Country Studio Art Tour\, make sure you stop and say hello! \nAbout Chloe Bischoff \nChloe Bischoff is a sculptor and ceramicist whose work investigates the millennia-old relationship between humans and clay. Their work investigates this relationship\, beholding clay as an emissary of matter through which to explore themes of animism\, selfhood\, and queer ecology—concepts that dissolve boundaries between living and nonliving entities and reimagine nature as an non-hierarchical\, entangled network of vibrant matter. Chloe sees their process as reciprocal interaction between themself and the clay\, a series of ritual encounters between two entities rather than as a utilization of an inert medium. \nAbout the Residency \nChloe’s residency project examines the relationship between the inhabitants of a place and the physical materials of that place.  Everything from Lanesboro’s geography to its built environment have been shaped by the people and materials which exist there\, from the steep bluffscapes that shape the river valley to the rich historical brick facades downtown. To explore this entanglement\, Chloe will invite community members to collect soil samples from significant places in their lives\, and incorporate them into clay to create a series of ceramic tokens. The resulting collection of sculptures will tell a story about Lanesboro’s human and material community. Learn More about Chloe’s Residency here. \nThe Lanesboro Early Career Artist Residency Program is Supported by the Jerome Foundation.

SUMMARY:“Natureworks” Exhibition Featuring Sculptures by Alonso Sierralta
DESCRIPTION:Lanesboro Arts presents “Natureworks\,” an exhibition of sculptures by Minneapolis-based artist Alonso Sierralta. \nThe exhibition runs from April 4th to May 31st. \nThe Lanesboro Arts Exhibition Gallery is open from 10am-5pm:\nApril: Thursday – Saturday \nMay: Wednesday – Monday \nAlways free to the public. \nThe concepts and subject matter for Sierralta’s work develop from ideas related to his experience as an immigrant. The spreading of seeds\, roots\, and pollen are the basic inspiration for the sculptural forms. With this metaphorical relationship\, forms and materials are selected with the intention of creating both harmony and discord\, echoing the way that moving to a new country\, learning a new language\, and giving up what is familiar elicits both optimism and fear. Disparate materials are selected to create a sense of tension and forced metamorphosis. \nThe sculptures are not meant as political commentary\, but rather as a visual representation of transplantation using organic forms and natural motifs. As Alonso explains\, “While for me the work is about moving to this country from Chile when I was fourteen\, ideas of growth\, challenge\, pain\, and building a future are universal\, not only for humans\, but for all of the natural world.” Through this examination of displacement and adaptation the viewer is encouraged to create a variety of visual and conceptual associations. \nThis exhibition is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a Minnesota State Arts Board Operating Support grant\, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.

SUMMARY:"The Shape of What Remains" Exhibition Featuring Sculpture by Zachary Leonard
DESCRIPTION:Lanesboro Arts is pleased to present “The Shape of What Remains” an exhibition featuring contemporary sculpture by Zachary Leonard. Centering on broken\, discarded\, and unconventional materials as analogues for the human body\, “The Shape of What Remains” invites viewers to consider how meaning and connection persists in what is typically overlooked\, forgotten\, or thrown away. \nCelebrate the exhibition with the Opening Reception at the Lanesboro Arts Gallery on Saturday\, February 7th\, from 5 – 7 pm with the artist\, live music\, and refreshments. The exhibition will run from February 7th through March 28th\, 2026. \nZachary Leonard is a Minneapolis-based artist\, working mainly with repurposed materials and items many people would consider to be trash. “Many would view dejected objects as trash or disposable\, but I find myself collecting these common materials\,” Leonard says. He spent time working for the City of Vancouver as a Recycling Coordinator through AmeriCorps\, and gained firsthand experience and understanding of the importance of recycling and sustainable living. “I also became aware of the circuit of human practices and behaviors that trash is bound with and expresses. As I got my hands dirty\, the amount of trash\, recyclables\, and habits of people (including mine) became a palpable reality to me\, and not an abstraction.” By scavenging and using these discarded materials which many people would consider worthless\, Leonard creates sculptures\, installations\, and drawings which convey his message. \nIn “The Shape of What Remains\,” Leonard uses broken\, discarded items from day to day life\, transforming them into surfaces that mirror the human body while emphasizing texture and abstraction. Leonard’s sculptures emerge from a deep attunement to damage\, repair\, and the quiet histories carried by everyday objects. \nAccessible and free to the public\, the Exhibition Gallery is located at 103 Parkway Ave N. in Lanesboro\, Minnesota\, and is open Thursday – Saturday\, 10 am – 5 pm in February and March. The organization provides year-round arts programming and serves as a regional catalyst for artistic excellence and educational development\, by providing diverse art experiences for people of all ages. \nThis activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board\, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund.

SUMMARY:Sanctuary: A Batik View Opening Artist Reception
DESCRIPTION:Join Lanesboro Arts in celebrating the opening reception of the “Sanctuary: A Batik View” Exhibition\, a solo exhibition featuring Batik landscape paintings. The opening reception will take place at the Lanesboro Arts Gallery on Saturday\, October 25th\, from 6 – 8 pm with the artists\, live music\, and refreshments. \nKim Gordon is a Minneapolis-based oil painter\, batik artist\, teacher\, designer and illustrator. As a lifelong artist\, she has long viewed art as a natural extension of thought and feeling\, a “meditative process of exploring the natural world”. Her work reflects a deep engagement with the environment\, a fascination with the shifting qualities of light\, and the tensions between serenity and vitality in the landscape. \nGordon turns to the ancient method of batik—an intricate wax-resist dyeing technique that originated in Indonesia. The process involves layering wax and pigment on cloth\, allowing the artist to play with both control and unpredictability. Cracks in the wax create delicate tracings where dye seeps through\, while repeated dye baths and removals build a vibrant complexity. \nThe exhibition will run through December 20th\, 2025. Learn more about Kim and her work here.

Her work reflects a deep engagement with the environment\, a fascination with the shifting qualities of light\, and the tensions between serenity and vitality in the landscape. Gordon draws from plein air immersive painting experience—observing the flutter of birds\, the changing light\, the rustle of leaves—to craft her own intimate language of mark-making and visual rhythm. \n“Sanctuary: A Batik View” is centered around the idea of sanctuary. While sanctuaries can be a physical space\, it can also be a state of mind. Gordon reflects on protected landscapes as havens for wildlife\, but also as mirrors for our inner lives. \n“Studying nature through an artist’s eye\, one may find a path inward\, a path that leads to solace and perspective\,” Gordon said. “That inner sense of sanctuary leads outward again and reconnects us to the natural world.” \nThrough this series\, Gordon invites viewers to consider how sanctuary is not just something to be found but something to be cultivated—within ourselves. Gordon turns to the ancient method of batik—an intricate wax-resist dyeing technique that originated in Indonesia. The process involves layering wax and pigment on cloth\, allowing the artist to play with both control and unpredictability. SUMMARY:"Returning the Sword" Book Signing with Author Caren Stelson
DESCRIPTION:Join Lanesboro Arts in the Gallery on Sunday\, October 5th from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. to visit with Author Caren Stelson and hear about her new book “Returning the Sword”. She will have her books for sale in the Gallery and will be offering to sign copies. \nHow a Japanese Sword of War Became a Symbol of Friendship and Peace\nwritten by Caren Stelson and illustrated by Amanda Yoshida \nReturning the Sword\nIn 1945\, just after the end of World War II\, Captain Orval Amdahl brought home a Japanese sword as a souvenir of war. Sixty-eight years later\, he gave it back. \nOrval Amdahl grew up in rural Minnesota and enlisted in the Marines during World War II. In August 1945\, the United States dropped atomic bombs on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki\, ending the war. Soon after\, Orval’s division was sent to keep the peace in Nagasaki\, and the devastation he witnessed there haunted him. When he returned home\, he tried to move on\, but he couldn’t forget the war―or the sword. And many years later\, at the age of ninety-three\, he got a chance to do something incredible. He met with the family of the soldier who had owned the sword and returned it to them. \nA powerful story of war\, peace\, and reconciliation. \n  \nLearn more about Caren Stelson\, here: https://lanesboroarts.org/juried-sales-gallery/caren-stelson/

SUMMARY:Hand of the Huldra Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:Step into a world of myth\, mystery and masterful metalwork with Hand of Huldra\, a stunning new exhibition by celebrated artist Liz Bucheit. \nInspired by the Norwegian folklore of the “Huldra” — mystical beings said to live beneath the mountains- Bucheit’s intricate silver filigree jewelry draws from centuries of Nordic tradition while forging a voice uniquely her own. \nJoin us for the opening reception on Saturday\, August 16 from 6-8 pm\, featuring an artist meet-and-greet\, live music by Kristin Eggen and Michael McGrath\, and refreshments from Clara’s Eatery. \nLiz\, a Decorah-based artist\, brings decades of experience and study from both Iowa and Norway to her work\, blending ancient techniques like delicate filigree and hand engraving with contemporary elegance. Her work speaks to the deep connections between art\, story\, and wearer– each piece steeped in craftsmanship\, folklore\, and personal meaning. \nThe exhibition will be on view through October 19\, 2025. SUMMARY:"Hand of the Huldra: The Silver Filigree Jewelry of Liz Bucheit" Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Join Lanesboro Arts in celebrating the opening reception of “Hand of the Huldra: The Silver Filigree Jewelry of Liz Bucheit.” This exhibition features contemporary silver filigree jewelry that evokes the spirit of the Norwegian “Huldra\,” mystical beings who have a mischievous tendency to whisk one away under the mountains. The Opening Reception will take place at the Lanesboro Arts Gallery on Saturday\, August 16th\, from 6 – 8 pm with the artist\, live music from Kristin Eggen and Michael McGrath\, and refreshments from Clara’s Eatery. The exhibition will run from August 16th through October 19th\, 2025. \n“Adornment is personal – a connection between art and the wearer\,” says Bucheit. “My work travels with the wearer throughout the legacy of their lives.” \nLiz Bucheit was born in Decorah\, Iowa\, where she grew up visiting the silver collection room at the Vesterheim  Norwegian-American Museum. The silver collection\, which housed cases of traditional bridal crowns\, belts\, and Sølje brooches\, inspired her to create her own jewelry with its own connection to the tradition. After completing her Master’s Degree in Metalworking and Jewelry at the University of Iowa in Iowa City\, she took several trips to Raulandsakademiat Folk School in Telemark Norway to study and construct the traditional styles of silver (sølje) jewelry worn with the regional folk dress (bunad). While Liz draws much of her expertise from traditional techniques like delicate filigree and engraving\, she is always looking to expand her voice within and throughout the margins of traditional Norwegian  silversmithing. \n“I was haunted by fairy tales of the mountain king stealing the bride on her wedding day. The silver jewelry she wore was supposed to protect her and only the most beautifully crafted pieces would ensure her safe delivery to the church.” \nThis exhibition takes Liz’s love of traditional Norwegian folktales and handcraft\, and melds it with contemporary concepts of jewelry making. This creates a stunning blend of style and quality craftsmanship that leaves the viewer wanting to see and learn more. Mixed with the imagery and the stories of the Huldra\, Liz Bucheit’s work is sure to inspire a feeling of being lost in the mystical woodlands of Norway. \nAccessible and free to the public\, the Exhibition Gallery is located at 103 Parkway Ave N. in Lanesboro\, Minnesota\, and is open Tuesday – Saturday\, 10 am – 5 pm. The organization provides year-round arts programming and serves as a regional catalyst for artistic excellence and educational development\, by providing diverse art experiences for people of all ages. SUMMARY:Artist Talk: Kelly Ristau
DESCRIPTION:Join Lanesboro Arts for an artist talk\, featuring Kelly Ristau. The event will take place at Lanesboro Arts gallery on Friday\, August 8th from 12 – 4 pm. During the talk\, Kelly will demonstrate about her work and printmaking process.  \nKelly is a linocut printmaker with the concept of queer intimacy at the heart of her work\, noting that queer identity often blurs the lines between platonic and romantic intimacy. Kelly defines intimacy as the trust required to share one’s mind\, body or soul with another person. At the same time\, Kelly’s work presents a commentary on the negative impact dating apps and social media have on intimacy. Kelly’s linocut prints locate intimate moments and slow them down through methodical line work\, stepping away from the fast paced worlds of modern intimacy. Her work asks the viewers: What does it mean to know and truly be known by someone? How have relationships changed with technology today?  Through her work\, she hopes to spark a deeper conversation about how intimate relationships are evolving in a technology-driven world\, while encouraging others to celebrate and take pride in the connections they hold dear. \nKelly’s work is featured in “Our Bright Unfolding” exhibition – a group exhibition embodying interconnected in motion\, a much needed light uplifting the power of artistic expression as a tool for societal transformation. The artwork in ‘Our Bright Unfolding’ reflects personal and collective growth\, resilience\, radical acts of joy\, and the power of unapologetic existence. In a time of profound upheaval when marginalized communities are increasingly under threat\, this exhibition serves as a necessary reminder to lean on community\, roots of resistance\, and visions for change. Learn more about this group exhibition at https://lanesboroarts.org/calendar/our-bright-unfolding/ \nThis work is funded in part by Minnesota Humanities Center with money from the Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund that was created with the vote of the people of Minnesota on November 4\, 2008. This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through grants from the Minnesota State Arts Board\, thanks to legislative appropriations from the Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund.

SUMMARY:Artist Talk: Prima Jalichandra - Sakuntabhai
DESCRIPTION:Join Lanesboro Arts for an artist talk featuring Prima Jalichandra – Sakuntabhai! The event will take place at Lanesboro Arts Gallery on Friday\, August 1st\, from 12 – 4pm. Prima will be in the gallery from 12 pm and start their talk at 1pm. The rest of the time will be available for any questions.  \nPrima Jalichandra-Sakuntabhai is a transdisciplinary artist\, curator and art worker\, currently based in St Paul\, Minnesota. As a Thai national\, raised in Europe and living in the United States of America\, they grew up without any sense of national allegiance. Their artistic practice intersects with the living urgency to find new ways of shaping identity for those who cannot be placed.  \nPrima will give an artist talk about their recent research project\, 174 / Neung Jed Si – A Short History of Thailand from which stems their work on view\, Study for “My Father Ruminates on the Origin of Love (2025). The talk will be accompanied by a reading of excerpts from the publication with the same name as well as documentation of the artist’s solo exhibition at Reisig and Taylor Contemporary\, Los Angeles in May/June 2025.  \nNeung Jed Si is a new research project that uses the artist’s family archive to create a mythic origin story for their chosen exile from Thailand. Initially conceived as a video essay\, the works expanded as an immersive installation\, featuring CNC sculptures\, animation\, multichannel video projections\, image transfer on wall\, a collaborative sound piece\, a slide projection and publication.   \nNeung Jed Si begins with a meditation on love and how the lover must journey to be reunited with their beloved. Starting with Pridi Banomyong\, the artist’s ancestor who was forced into self-exile by a military coup in the 40s to their parents’ long-distance relationship during their father’s studies to their decision to remain abroad\, the narrative expands on their legacy of diaspora and inner alienation from their country of origin. Simultaneously\, the artist’s family traces back to the historical capital of Ayutthaya and services to the king. Conflicted between these two tensions\, sedentary and migrant\, monarchist and revolutionary\, shorelines and bodies of water become a recurring motif that represent this discomfort and desire for motion.   \nPrima’s work is featured in “Our Bright Unfolding” exhibition – a group exhibition embodying interconnected in motion\, a much needed light uplifting the power of artistic expression as a tool for societal transformation. The artwork in ‘Our Bright Unfolding’ reflects personal and collective growth\, resilience\, radical acts of joy\, and the power of unapologetic existence. SUMMARY:Artist Talk: Candida Gonzalez
DESCRIPTION:Join Lanesboro Arts for an artist talk featuring Candida Gonzalez! The event will take place at the Lanesboro Arts Gallery on Saturday\, July 26th\, from 12 – 4 pm with the artist sharing about their Seen Tarot installation that is currently up in the Gallery. During the talk\, Candida will focus on the techniques they use in their collages and will have a visual representation to go along with it.  \nCandida is a queer\, trans\, non-binary mixed Puerto Rican\, multimedia artist from South Minneapolis\, who manipulates basic elements into different configurations to produce distinct energies and spells. Using a variety of media including traditional collage\, photography\, found objects\, text\, video\, and sound\, they create interactive installations and images that hold space for complex emotions. Their digital collage work often reimagines the traditional archetypes of the major arcana in tarot\, creating space to celebrate the regal sacredness of the QTBIPOC (Queer Trans Black Indigenous People of Color) community. All of their work is centered at the intersection of love and healing. \nCandida is featured in “Our Bright Unfolding” exhibition – a group exhibition embodying interconnected in motion\, a much needed light uplifting the power of artistic expression as a tool for societal transformation. SUMMARY:“Our Bright Unfolding” Group Art Exhibition Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:Join Lanesboro Arts in celebrating the opening reception for “Our Bright Unfolding”\, a group exhibition including paintings\, photographs\, quilted textiles\, and more. The opening reception will take place at the Lanesboro Arts Gallery on Saturday\, June 7th\, from 6 – 8 pm with the artists\, live music\, and refreshments. The exhibition will run from June 7th through August 9th\, 2025 and features work from artists Sarah Abdel-Jelil\, Sophia Alhadeff\, Marge Buckley\, Kish Daniels\, Candida Gonzalez\, Avery Hunter\, Prima Jalichandra-Sakuntabhai\, Avigail Manneberg\, Kelly Ristau\, and Dana Sikkila. \nThis Opening Reception is a free public celebration of their work. Visitors will have the opportunity take in the stirring paintings on display and hear from the artists themselves. This joyful\, artful evening will also feature live music from a local performer and light refreshments. \nFeatured Images (from top left):\n1) friends or dating by Kelly Ristau\n2) Another One Comes In by Dana Sikkila\n3) Power Play by Avigail Manneberg\nThis group exhibition embodies interconnectedness in motion\, a much-needed light uplifting the power of artistic expression as a tool of practice for societal change. \nSarah Abdel-Jelil is a Mauritanian-American filmmaker\, dancer\, musician and multimedia artist based in Minneapolis\, Mni Sota Makoce (Minnesota). Her work explores the relational nature of home\, movement\, and liminal spaces. As a filmmaker and dancer\, she is drawn to the tension between the digital and physical\, between the ephemerality of dance and the enduring nature of video. \nMarge Buckley is an experimental artist who works with oils\, acrylic\, collage\, ink\, canvas\, paper\, and wood panels. Her figurative works involve portraits of queer community. She uses dramatic colors and surreal compositions as tools of optimism which assert that the systems can be transformed in radical ways. \nKish Daniels is a Minnesota-based\, first generation Liberian-American filmmaker and photographer. His photographs represent moments of introspection\, simple pleasures and reclamation of time and space. The images are a remembrance that everyday activities can bring joy\, can become a practice of empowerment and that stillness is a healing and radical act. \nCandida Gonzalez is a multimedia artist who uses collage\, photography\, found objects\, text\, video\, and sound to create interactive installations that hold space for complex emotions. Their digital collage work often reimagines the traditional archetypes of the major arcana in tarot\, creating space to celebrate the regal sacredness of the QTBIPOC community. \nIn Avery Hunter’s acrylic paintings\, he looks to expose vulnerability and to explore the depths within himself and others through self-portraits that seek the abstract of light\, darkness and color. These works mirror the idea that disability and identity isn’t simply a linear journey. \nPrima Jalichandra-Sakuntabhai (b. Bangkok\, Thailand) is a transdisciplinary artist\, curator and art worker\, currently based in St Paul\, Minnesota. Study For “My Father Ruminates on the Origin of Love (2025) is a part of the larger research project\, Neung Jed Si that uses their family archive to create a mythic origin story for their chosen exile from Thailand. This piece is a study for a larger wall piece with the same title. \nAvigail Manneberg processes current personal and political events in their work\, including the destruction of households\, homelands\, and relationships. Their art—like their life—is based on their history and culture\, a combination of German\, Israeli\, and American. They explore the relationship between power dynamics and destruction and search for growth. \nOlam Haba Quilt: This community quilt\, guided by artists Sophia Alhadeff and Shug Munic\, asks “How is Jewish safety and Palestinian liberation inherently intertwined?” Olam HaBa translates to “the world to come.” Drawing from the history and legacy of community activist quilts\, this quilt acts as a communal practice of envisioning the world we wish to live in. \nKelly Ristau is a linocut printmaker exploring the concept of queer intimacy. Through their work\, they hope to spark a deeper conversation about how intimate relationships are evolving in a technology-driven world\, while encouraging others to celebrate and take pride in the connections they hold dear. \nDana Sikkila’s work displays\, through visual repetition\, the obsessive relationship between the art-making process and final products. In these screen printed and painted works\, Sikkila battles the question of “What’s Next?” This constant\, mostly innocent inquiry triggers her manic stages of working\, which you see in the repetition and mark-making within her paintings. \nThis show was curated by the Equitable Gallery Systems Review Program advisory committee\, made up of BIPOC\, LGBTQIA+\, and disabled artists. Lanesboro Arts has launched this program as a commitment to further align practices with equity values and more deeply serve BIPOC\, LGBTQIA+ and disabled artists. For more information\, visit www.lanesboroarts.org. \nThis work is funded in part by Minnesota Humanities Center with money from the Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund that was created with the vote of the people of Minnesota on November 4\, 2008. This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board\, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund. \n
