Robert Gherke

For his work in craft items and oil paintings, Bob finds inspiration in the local landscape and the found object. As a wood turner, his longtime obsession is the twist spin top, one of the world’s oldest toys. Recurring themes in his paintings are the detritus of nature, infinite progression, near and far, fragile and enduring, calm and chaos. “I try to create an open-ended narrative that is layered, accessible and personal,” he says. “A walk along the river, a story I’m reading, a found object or a piece of wood may engage my imagination. I am attracted to things that are often overlooked, forgotten or cloistered away. They seem to represent the mysterious and unconscious forces that often guide our lives.”
