“Ca$h” is the theme of the next “Over the Back Fence” Community Variety Show presented by Lanesboro Arts on Friday, May 10th at 7:30 p.m. at the historic St. Mane Theatre in downtown Lanesboro. Songs like “If I Had a Million Dollars,” “The Gold Diggers’ Song (We’re in the Money)” and “Saginaw, Michigan,” as well as a reprisal of the train scene fromLanesboro Community Theater’s “Music Man,” will each be part of a splendid evening that also includes jokes, stories, and sing-alongs.
May’s show features musical guest Larry Long, a celebrated folk & roots singer-songwriter and troubadour that will be in Lanesboro May 8 – 10 for a mini-residency at Lanesboro Arts that culminates in a concert with a seven-piece band at the St. Mane Theatre on Friday, May 17. Larry will use his songwriting curriculum at outreach events to assist Lanesboro community members in sharing their stories and turning that collective narrative into a song. He is inviting members of the variety show cast to join him on stage to provide vocal accompaniment on one of his songs. Interested individuals of all ages are encouraged to join Larry at a rehearsal with cast members on May 7 at 7 p.m. and/or May 10 at 5:30 p.m. Larry’s participation in Lanesboro Arts’ Performing Artist Engagement Program is made possible through an Arts Tour grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the Arts & Cultural Heritage Fund.
Host Damon Prestemon continues to drive the 25th anniversary season forward with his rapid-fire wit and keen improvisational instincts that keep the show fresh while having fun with the performers and guests on stage. Doors open for seating at 7 p.m. with GrassRun Band, a bluegrass quartet from La Crosse and Decorah, providing pre-show musical entertainment beginning at 7:10 p.m.
The shows are held monthly on the 2nd Fridays of March-November.
