Change was in the wind for the small Minnesota town of Rochester in the summer of 1883. When a huge tornado devastated the city, Dr. W. W. Mayo – along with his sons, Will and Charlie – teamed with Mother Alfred Moes and the Sisters of St. Francis to care for the hundreds who were injured. They soon discovered that good things can come from adversity: they decided that a hospital was needed in the little prairie town.

The Tornado brought great change to the city of Rochester and, ultimately, the entire world with the beginning of Saint Marys Hospital and the Mayo Clinic.
