The Magic Hours
Artist: Sara Lubinski
Landscape Painting
Reception: Saturday, June 5, 6-8 p.m.
With a background as an ecologist and botanist, Sara Lubinski has a heightened awareness of the natural world, contributing a great deal to her artistic perspectives. She believes there is a strong connection between interpreting the landscape artistically and understanding and respecting the environment. The artist works "en plein air" (outdoors), painting big pieces or small studies to be used for larger paintings. While at the easel, she aims toward the essential functions of art: exploring the mysteries of the world; searching for meaning; becoming enlightened, wise, and whole; and in turn, sharing her sense of awe and place in the world with others.
Sara Lubinski also sometimes paints in the manner of the late 19th century tonalist aesthetic: an older, quieter style of painting with an emphasis on the "Magic hours" of dusk, twilight, and dawn. This indirect method of painting requires a build-up of very thin layers of dark transparent colors, followed by opaque colors on portions of the painting. This layering method helps create depth, mood and a luminous quality to the surface of the painting. The artist lives in Brownsville, Minn.
The exhibit is sponsored by Commonweal Theatre Company and supported by the Minnesota State Arts Board. |

Sculptures from the Forest
Artist: Paul Lambrecht
Wood Sculpture
Reception: Saturday, Aug. 14, 6-8 p.m.
Lanesboro artist Paul Lambrecht has been carving and exhibiting his work at prestigious art fairs throughout the country since 1980. He recently showed at the Cherry Creek Art Festival in Denver, Colo. and the Old Town Art Fair in Chicago, Ill. Using nature and everyday life as inspiration for his wood sculpture, Paul creates realistic works using kiln-dried basswood, which he hand-carves, applies acrylic paint and stains, then layers on numerous coats of lacquer. This process gives the work a shine that is more suggestive of glass or fine stone than wood, engaging the viewer in an experience of wonder as they question the medium. Lambrecht, a self-taught artist, focuses on the aesthetic principles of composition and movement in his carving. "I strive to always push myself to do sculptures that take wood carving to a new level," he says. The exhibit at Lanesboro Arts Center will feature sculptures with a subject mix of birds, animals, frogs, intricate fabric folds, and everyday objects. The pieces range from 8x10x12" to 36x36x48".
The exhibit is sponsored by F&M Community Bank and Inspire(d) Media. |
